St. Louis Steamers (1979–1988)
The original St. Louis Steamers played in the original Major Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League from 1979 through 1988. Their home fixtures were held at the St. Louis Arena. The Steamers were popular for a number of years, with average attendance exceeding 12,000 for each season from 1980–81 through 1984–85, and outdrawing the NHL's St. Louis Blues for four consecutive seasons from 1980–81 through 1983–84. Sam Bick
Sam Bick (born St. Louis, Missouri) is a former American soccer midfielder. He spent nine seasons in the North American Soccer League and seven seasons in the Major Indoor Soccer League. He also earned two caps with the United States men's national soccer team in 1976. Youth and college Bick grew up in St. Louis, Missouri where he played in the St. Louis Celtics youth club and for De Smet Jesuit High School. He then attended Quincy University, playing on the men's soccer team from 1972 to 1975. In 1973, 1974 and 1975 Quincy won the NAIA Championship. Bick not only experienced success with his team, he also experienced personal recognition, earning both NAIA All Tournament and first team All American recognition in 1975. He graduated from Quincy in 1976 and was selected to the Quincy Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984. Professional In 1976, the Minnesota Kicks signed Bick. Steve Pecher
Steve Pecher (born St. Louis, Missouri) is an American former soccer defender who is currently the Missouri Girls Director of St Louis Scott Gallagher. Youth and college Pecher began playing soccer with the youth club, Florissant Cougars, then with his high school team at Normandy High School in St. Louis. He was part of the team which took the Missouri state championship in 1974, his senior year. He was also All State both his junior and senior years. The next year attended Florissant Valley Community College where he played on the national junior college championship team in 1975. He was a junior college All American both years at Florissant. Professional In 1976, the Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League (NASL) signed Pecher. That season he was named the 1976 NASL Rookie of the Year.
