St. Jerome In Penitence (Antonello Da Messina)
''St Jerome Penitent'' and ''Abraham Served by the Angels'' are two paintings by the Italian Renaissance master Antonello da Messina. They are housed in the Pinacoteca Civica, Reggio Calabria. These two panels are considered amongst the first works by Antonello da Messina. They were both intended for devotion of private owners. St. Jerome The painting shows elements inspired both the Flemish and Italian painting schools. The former belongs the rugged landscape, while typically Italian is the kneeling posture of St. Jerome. Abraham Served by the Angels Due to its poor conditions, for a long time this work was considered a part of a larger ''Nativity''. Antonello Da Messina
Antonello da Messina, properly Antonello di Giovanni di Antonio, but also called Antonello degli Antoni and Anglicized as Anthony of Messina ( 1430February 1479), was an Italian painter from Messina, active during the Early Italian Renaissance. His work shows strong influences from Early Netherlandish painting, although there is no documentary evidence that he ever travelled beyond Italy. Giorgio Vasari credited him with the introduction of oil painting into Italy, although this is now disputed. Unusually for a southern Italian artist of the Renaissance, his work proved influential on painters in northern Italy, especially in Venice. The works encompassed are from Giotto in the early 14th century to Michelangelo's ''Last Judgement'' of the 1530s.
