The St. James Football Club was an Australian rules football club based in St. James, in North East Victoria, Australia, and was formed in May 1883. History The first recorded football match for St. James Football club was against Tungamah Football Club in Tungamah on Saturday, 16 June 1883, with Tungamah Football Club winning three goals to two goals. The team won its first senior football premiership in 1884, winning the J. H. Fitzgerald Cup. The football club's president in 1908 was Sir George J. Coles, whose very first retail business was in St. James, which he purchased from his father, George W. Coles. His company, the Coles Group, would grow to become Australia's largest retail business. The Ovens & King Football Netball League is a minor country Australian rules football league based in North-Eastern Victoria in the vicinity of Wangaratta and more recently Benalla. History The ''Ovens & King Football League'' was formed on the 13th of June 1903, after a handful of men met at The Bulls Head Hotel in Wangaratta to consider forming a football competition. One week later, the first matches of the Ovens & King Football Association were played. The competition changed its name to the Ovens and King Football League after the 1928 season. The original Benalla District Football League was formed in 1929 from the following clubs - Baddaginnie, Benalla - "B", Swanpool, Tatong, Thoona and Winton. Gordon Vincent Green (28 February 1890 – 30 May 1973) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football League (1897–1989), Victorian Football League (VFL). Jim Flynn (footballer)
James Edward Flynn (21 March 1871 – 24 August 1955) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong and Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). A ruckman, after two brief VFA stints, the Benalla-born Flynn started his career in earnest in 1897 where he was part of Geelong's inaugural VFL side. Flynn stayed with the club until the end of the 1902 season when he crossed to Carlton. He was made Carlton captain in 1905, and in 1906 led them to the premiership, defeating Fitzroy in the Grand Final. Due to business commitments in St James, running the local hotel (pub) which still operates today (37 kilometres north of Benalla), he retired from football; however, he returned for the 1907 finals series after captain Fred Elliott was suspended. Flynn's captaincy was sought after and he led them to another premiership.
