St. Francis Of Assisi Cathedral, Rhodes
The St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral ( el, Εκκλησία του Αγ. Φραγκίσκου της Ασίζης) also called Catholic Cathedral of Rhodes, is a Roman Catholic church located in the city of Rhodes, Greece, near the gate of St. Athanasius, between the two districts Acandia and St. John. The church is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rhodes. On September 20, 1936 the first stone was laid in the presence of Archbishop Giovanni Castellani and the Italian governor of the Dodecanese, Mario Lago. The works for the construction of the church, designed by architect Armando Bernabiti, ended in 1939. In 1940 the church was equipped with an organ and enriched with 14 terracotta bas-reliefs depicting the Stations of the Cross, the sculptor Monteleone. Rhodes (; el, Ρόδος , translit=Ródos ) is the largest and the historical capital of the Dodecanese islands of Greece. The Archdiocese of Rhodes ( la, Archidioecesis Rhodiensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or archdiocese of the Catholic Church in Greece. Giovanni Castellani
Giovanni Maria Emilio Castellani O.F.M. (13 April 1888 – 30 August 1953) was an Italian prelate of the Catholic Church, who became an archbishop in 1929 and led jurisdictions in Greece and Ethiopia. He worked in the diplomatic service of the Holy See from 1945 to 1953. Biography Giovanni Castellani was born in Civitella, in the Diocese of Todi, Italy, on 13 April 1888. Mario Lago (1878, in Savona – 1950, in Capri) was an Italian statesman and diplomat. Biography Originally from the town of Peveragno, Lago was Governor of the Italian Aegean Islands from 1922 to 1936. His term of office is characterized by a far-sighted policy and respect for ethnic and cultural identity of the inhabitants of the colony. He was able to integrate the Greek, Turkish and Sephardic Jewish communities of the island of Rhodes with the Italian colonists. He also encouraged intermarriage with local Greeks. This period constituted what might in retrospective be called the "Golden Age" of the Italian Dodecanese, with the economy booming and a relatively harmonious society.
