St. Dominic's Church, Bahawalpur is in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Multan in Pakistan. History The church of St. Dominic was built in 1962. The parish is also home to a convent, St. Dominic's Middle School for boys and the Dominican Convent School for girls. In Bahawalpur, there are about 2,000 Catholic families and about 250 Church of Pakistan families. The Church of Pakistan community has no place of worship of their own, so they were offered the use of St. Dominic's Church for their Sunday morning services. Father Zafar Iqbal, the first Pakistani Dominican priest, was the parish priest of St. Dominic's Church until his death from a motorcycle crash on February 19, 2009. Benny Mario Travas is a Pakistani prelate of the Catholic Church and Archbishop of Karachi, Pakistan. He served as Bishop of Multan from 2015-2021. Biography Travas was born in Karachi, Pakistan, on 21 November 1966. He received his early education from St. Patrick's High School, Karachi from where he graduated in 1983. He graduated from the Christ the King seminary and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Karachi on 7 December 1990 and then spent seven years in pastoral work. In 1997, he received a licentiate in canon law from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. Bahawalpur Church Shooting
The Bahawalpur church shooting was a mass shooting at Saint Dominic's Church in Bahawalpur, Punjab, Pakistan on 28 October 2001 by six assailants belonging to Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. The guard of the church and 17 other Christians were killed. Background Non-Muslims are targeted in Pakistan by extremists. Since Pakistan backed the United States in the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan, terrorists are targeting Pakistani minorities, especially Christians.
