St. Augustine Town Plan Historic District
The St Augustine Town Plan Historic District is a U.S. National Historic Landmark District encompassing the colonial heart of the city. It substantially encompasses the street plan of the city as contained within the bounds of walls (no longer standing) built between the 16th and early 19th centuries. The district is bounded by Cordova, Orange, and St. Francis Streets, and Matanzas Bay. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970, although its boundaries were not formally defined until 1986. Description and history St. Augustine, founded by Spain in 1565, is the oldest permanent European settlement on the mainland of North America, north of Mexico. Its long colonial history extends to 1822, when Spanish East Florida was annexed to the United States as part of the Florida Territory. A National Historic Landmark (NHL) is a building, district, object, site, or structure that is officially recognized by the United States government for its outstanding historical significance. Only some 2,500 (~3%) of over 90,000 places listed on the country's National Register of Historic Places are recognized as National Historic Landmarks. Ponce De Leon Hotel
The Ponce de Leon Hotel, also known as The Ponce, was an exclusive luxury hotel in St. Augustine, Florida, built by millionaire developer and Standard Oil co-founder Henry Flagler, Henry M. Flagler and completed in 1888. The hotel was designed in the Spanish Renaissance style as the first major project of the New York architecture firm Carrère and Hastings, Carrère & Hastings, which would go on to gain world renown. The hotel was the first of its kind constructed entirely of poured concrete, using the local coquina stone as aggregate. The hotel was also one of the first buildings in the country wired for electricity from the onset, with the power being supplied by Direct current, DC generators installed by Flagler's friend, Thomas Edison. William Watson House
The William Watson House is located at 206 Charlotte Street in St. Augustine, Florida. It is a reconstructed property representing the architecture of St. Augustine's British Period (1763-1784). William Watson William Watson was a Scottish carpenter employed by Andrew Turnbull, the Scottish physician who started the New Smyrna colony in East Florida in 1768. Watson was first hired in London to oversee the carpenters who would eventually build Turnbull's plantation buildings. Watson built Turnbull's own house four miles north of the colony's harbor. By 1777 he had built 145 house valued at 45 pounds each, using frame construction. As lead carpenter, he was labeled as an overseer and was allegedly a harsh taskmaster. He eventually moved to St. Augustine and lived next door to Father Pedro Camps, to whom he charged the task of selling his property when he and the British left St. Augustine at the end of St. Augustine's British Period. The Wells Print Shop was located at 27 Cuna Street in St. Augustine, Florida. It operated as part of the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board's 18th century museum village, San Agustín Antiguo, demonstrating the colonial printmaking process. William Wells William Charles Wells was born in 1757 in Charleston, South Carolina, the son of a Tory printer, publisher, and bookseller. He was formally trained as a doctor, receiving a degree in medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1780. When the British left Charleston in 1782, William and his brother John moved to St. Augustine where they established a print shop. In St. Augustine the Wells brothers are most well known for publishing the ''East Florida Gazette'', the first newspaper in Florida. Triay House
The Triay House is a historic property located at 31 St. George Street in St. Augustine, Florida. It is a reconstruction of the First Spanish Period structure that stood on the site. History Early Spanish records of St. Augustine show that Pedro de Florencia owned a house made of stone that stood on this property during the First Spanish Period. While the British were in possession of Florida, merchant Jesse Fish held the property. Juan San Salvador bought the property when Florida was returned to Spain in 1783, but soon after sold it to Francisco Triay. Triay was a Minorcan settler who came to St. Augustine from Andrew Turnbull's New Smyrna colony. The Triay family owned the home through 1834, and the original house stood on the site as a residence and served in various commercial capacities until 1904 when a two-story house was built. Spanish Military Hospital Museum
The Spanish Military Hospital Museum is located at 3 Aviles Street, St. Augustine, Florida. The museum covers the Second Spanish Period (1784-1821) medical practices. The precise location of William Sims's 18th century original shop is unknown. William Sims William Sims was a silversmith from Scotland who operated a shop in the town of St. Augustine during the town's British Period (1763-1784). Santoyo is a municipality located in the province of Palencia, Castile and León, Spain. History The lands within the borders of the current municipality of Santoyo were populated since, at least, classical antiquity. In the Sarnallano moor some material remains of a vaccaean fort can be found. The "Las Quintanas" Roman villa was built in the Late_Roman_Empire, probably in the 4th century - in the 1990s archaeologists discovered amongst its ruins an oven, a ''hypocaustum'', some pottery (both terra sigillata and common) and a well full of debris. All settlements were abandoned as a consequence of the downfall of the Visigothic Kingdom.
