St. Anthony's Parish (Karachi)
St. Anthony's Parish is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Karachi in Pakistan. History The idea of St. Anthony's Parish was first conceived in 1937. A plot of land with a large bungalow was acquired on McNeil Road. The largest room was converted into a small church, two rooms served as the presbytery while the two others would be a school. On February 13, 1937, a relic of St. Anthony was brought in procession and the first parish priest Fr. Aquina van Liebergen O.F.M. was appointed. In 1941 it had 829 parishioners. In the first year of the parish, the first to be Baptised in the new parish was Anthony Joseph Mahnga. On June 25, 1939, the foundation stone of the present church was laid, but due to the war, it was decided to postpone the construction. In 1941 the old church was painted and renovated just before the feast of Pentecost. The new antependium of the altar, the work of a generous lady artist, was used for the first time on the feast. The Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd, also known as the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, is a Catholic religious order that was founded in 1835 by Mary Euphrasia Pelletier in Angers, France. The religious sisters belong to a Catholic international congregation of religious women dedicated to promoting the welfare of women and girls. The Congregation has a representative at the United Nations, and has spoken out against human trafficking. Mary Langan RJM is an Irish Roman Catholic nun working in Pakistan since 1983. In 2013 the Tamgha-e-Quaid-e-Azam was conferred on her by President Asif Ali Zardari for her services in the field of education. Early life Langan was born in Ireland on 17 June 1948. Her parents were Michael Langan, a contractor and Marian. She studied with the Sisters of Jesus and Mary at the boarding school in Gortnor Abbey, Crossmolina, County Mayo. The Religious of Jesus and Mary (french: Religieuses de Jésus-Marie), abbreviated as R.J.M., form a Roman Catholic religious congregation of women dedicated to the education and service of the poor. It was founded at Lyon, France, in October 1818, by Saint Claudine Thévenet. Foundation Thévenet had survived the siege of her native city by the forces of the French Revolution, seeing two of her brothers executed before her eyes in 1794. This inspired a resolve in her to dedicate her life to the relief of the suffering in the world. Some 20 years later, her work came to be guided by a local Catholic priest, the Abbé André Coindre, who was committed to establishing institutions to educate and help the children of the poor in the city. Robert McCulloch SSC is an Australian priest and member of the Missionary Society of St. Columban, who served in Pakistan from 1978 to 2011. He was decorated by the Government of Pakistan for his services to health and education in 2012. Early life McCulloch was born in 1946 in Alexandra, Victoria, to Bruce John McCulloch and Jean Frances Crowe. John Berchmans Conway, R.J.M. (born Bernadette Conway 1929 – 21 December 2022), usually known as Sister Berchmans, was an Irish Roman Catholic religious sister and teacher who worked in Pakistan for 60 years. In 2012 she was decorated by the Government of Pakistan for her services in education and promoting interfaith harmony. Early life Conway was born in County Clare, Ireland.
