St. Anne Catholic Church (Napoleonville, Louisiana)
The St. Anne Catholic Church in Napoleonville, Louisiana is a historic Roman Catholic church which was built in 1909. It is located about four blocks inland from Bayou Lafourche at 417 St. Joseph Street, as part of a two-block parcel which includes a contributing rectory (1895) and a contributing cemetery (started 1874), as well as three non-contributing buildings. It was added to the National Register in 2001. It is a one-story basilica plan church reflecting Romanesque influence with a gable front flanked by two towers, one dating to c.1920 and reflecting Colonial Revival architecture. The church has a number of large round arch windows, with those on the nave and chancel topped by brick archivolts "laid in corbelled concentric semicircles to suggest texture". Napoleonville, Louisiana
Napoleonville is a village and the parish seat of Assumption Parish, in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The population was 660 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pierre Part Micropolitan Statistical Area. The village is best known as the location where the film ''Because of Winn-Dixie'', based on Kate DiCamillo's Newbery Prize-winning novel, was shot. The book was set in (fictional) Naomi, Florida. History As early as 1807 the community that later became Napoleonville was known as "Canal". This canal extended west from Napoleonville to Lake Verret. The village that later developed was named by a former French soldier who served under Napoleon Bonaparte. The French veteran, Pierre Charlet, is buried in the cemetery of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in the nearby community of Plattenville in Assumption Parish. Corbelled
In architecture, a corbel is a structural piece of stone, wood or metal jutting from a wall to carry a superincumbent weight, a type of bracket. A corbel is a solid piece of material in the wall, whereas a console is a piece applied to the structure. A piece of timber projecting in the same way was called a "tassel" or a "bragger" in England. The technique of corbelling, where rows of corbels deeply keyed inside a wall support a projecting wall or parapet, has been used since Neolithic (New Stone Age) times. It is common in medieval architecture and in the Scottish baronial style as well as in the vocabulary of classical architecture, such as the modillions of a Corinthian cornice. The corbel arch and corbel vault use the technique systematically to make openings in walls and to form ceilings. Archivolts
An archivolt (or voussure) is an ornamental moulding or band following the curve on the underside of an arch. It is composed of bands of ornamental mouldings (or other architectural elements) surrounding an arched opening, corresponding to the architrave in the case of a rectangular opening. The word is sometimes used to refer to the under-side or inner curve of the arch itself (more properly, the ''intrados''). Most commonly archivolts are found as a feature of the arches of church portals. The mouldings and sculptures on these archivolts are used to convey a theological story or depict religious figures and ideologies of the church in order to represent the gateway between the holy space of the church and the external world.
