St. Anna, Wisconsin
St. Anna is an unincorporated community in Calumet and Sheboygan Counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It lies in the towns of Russell and New Holstein. History St. Anna priest Rev. John Haen described the St. Anna area prior to European emigrants: "The land at the coming of the early settlers in this vicinity was covered with dense forests which had not been touched by woodmen's axe. The soil was rich and fertile for no plowshare had entered. The woods were teeming with deer and other wild animals hunted only by the Brothertown Indians who inhabited this region." In 1848, 70 emigrants from Hamburg, Germany, settled in the New Holstein area, forming the basis of what would become the present city of New Holstein. St. Anna's development began in the fall of 1848 when some of these German Roman Catholics built a log church. The church had added a school by 1878. New Holstein is a city in Calumet County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 3,236 at the 2010 census. The city is located within the Town of New Holstein. History New Holstein is named after the Schleswig-Holstein region in Germany from which many early settlers emigrated. Calvary, Wisconsin is an unincorporated community located in the town of Marshfield, in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. The community was originally known locally as Calvary Station since the community was built around the railroad depot for Mount Calvary. The Holyland is an American region located mainly in northeastern Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin and southern Calumet County. The area is known for its distinctive agricultural landscape, a close-knit community life, and deep Roman Catholicism brought by Germans who first settled the region in the 1840s.
