Sribati G.K. High School
Sribati G.K. High School (Bengali: ''Sribati Gokul Krishna Uchchavidyalaya'') is a government high school located in Sribati, Katwa II, Bardhaman District, West Bengal, India. Established in 1867, it is one of the oldest schools in the area, and offers co-educational classes up to the tenth grade. It is the only educational institution in Sribati. History Sribati G.K. High School, originally called 'Sribati Vidyamandir' was the brainchild of Shri Gokul Krishna Chandra, a prominent citizen of Sribati (1836-1893), and a member of Sribati's prominent Chandra family. Initially, the school only served as a primary school, starting with kindergarten. To encourage local families to send their children to school, Mr. Chandra instituted a mid-day meal program offering a lunch of sweetened puffed rice-cakes and bananas to students. Sribati or Sreebati is a village and gram panchayat in Katwa II Community development block in India, CD block in the Katwa subdivision of Purba Bardhaman district, Purba Bardhaman district of West Bengal. Katwa II is a community development block that forms an administrative division in Katwa subdivision of Purba Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Geography Katwa II CD Block is part of the Bhagirathi basin. The Bhagirathi forms the eastern boundary of the CD Block. The region has many swamps and water-logged areas. The soil is fertile, as it consists mainly of silt deposits. Bardhaman (, ) is a city and a municipality in the state of West Bengal, India. It is the headquarters of Purba Bardhaman district, having become a district capital during the period of British rule. Burdwan, an alternative name for the city, has remained in use since then. Etymology The history of Burdwan is known from about 5000 BC (the Mesolithic or Late Stone Age). Purba Bardhaman district is in West Bengal. Its headquarters is in Bardhaman. It was formed on 7 April 2017 after the division of the previous Bardhaman district.
