Sri Lanka Railways S11
Sri Lanka Railways Class S11 is a diesel multiple-unit (DMU) train, built for Sri Lanka Railways by Integral Coach Factory and imported through RITES Ltd, an Indian state infrastructure corporation on a line of credit extended by the Indian Government. They were built to replace locomotive-hauled passenger trains. Twenty S11 DMUs were ordered to strengthen long-distance travel on the Coastal Line from Colombo to Matara. History Conception The railway decided to add the DMUs to its service as part of its Coastal line's upgrade project, where track was upgraded to improve speed. The DMUs were built by Integral Coach Factory, to replace locomotive-hauled passenger trains. Inauguration into service The trains were inaugurated into the railway service on 11 March 2011, with a ceremony at Matara Railway Station. Integral Coach Factory
Integral Coach Factory (ICF) is a manufacturer of ICF coach, rail coaches located in Perambur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It was established in 1955 and is owned and operated by the Indian Railways. It is located in Perambur, in the suburbs of Chennai. The ICF is one of the four rake production units of the Indian Railways, the other three being the Modern Coach Factory, Raebareli, Modern Coach Factory at Raebareli, Rail Coach Factory at Kapurthala and Marathwada Rail Coach Factory, Latur, Marathwada Rail Coach Factory at Latur. ''Rajarata Rejini'' ( si, රජරට රැජිණි, Queen of the King's Land) is a daytime passenger train that runs between Anuradhapura and Beliatta via Colombo Fort in Sri Lanka. ''Uttara Devi'' ( si, උත්තර දේවී, Princess/Queen of the North ta, உத்தர தேவி) is an Intercity Express train that runs between Colombo, the nation's commercial hub, with the northern cities of Jaffna and Kankesanturai. Alawwa
Alawwa is a town and divisional secretariat of the Kurunegala District in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka. The town is considered part of the Coconut Triangle, where most of the country's coconut exports come from. The population was 63,667 at the 2012 Sri Lankan census. 2011 Alawwa Rail Accident
The 2011 Alawwa rail accident, occurred on the evening of Saturday 17 September 2011, when a passenger train, Sri Lanka Railways S11, drove into an observation car at the back of a stationary Intercity Express train near the Alawwa railway station, approximately northeast of Colombo. The accident resulted in the death of five people, including a French national, a Thai Buddhist monk and the train driver, with over 30 injured. The Intercity Express had been pushing a Rambukkana-bound train from Colombo, which had stalled near Alawwa. The accident may have been caused by human error, and the S11 train ran into the observation car at the end of the other train. Investigation A three-member committee, comprising Nimal Dissanayake, retired Appeal Court judge, Sanath Panawella, Director Arthur C. A diesel multiple unit or DMU is a multiple-unit train powered by on-board diesel engines. A DMU requires no separate locomotive, as the engines are incorporated into one or more of the carriages. Dual Coupling
Different types of railroad rolling stock have different couplers depending on the purpose and type of equipment being used and its intended destination. European rolling stock tend to use buffers and chain couplers while American rolling stock uses a Janney coupler or "knuckle coupler". These are incompatible with each other, but where some railroads have obtained older, less expensive used rolling stock from different countries or regions, instead of having to standardize on one form of coupler, it may be useful to be able to use either type of coupler on a piece of rolling stock without having to remove anything. It is possible to mount both buffers and chain and knuckle couplers on the same car, provided that the knuckle can swing out of the way.
