Sri Lanka Davis Cup Team
The Sri Lanka Davis Cup team represents Sri Lanka in Davis Cup tennis competition and are governed by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association. Sri Lanka currently do compete in the Asia/Oceania Zone of Group III. They have reached the semifinals of Group II on five occasions. History Sri Lanka competed in its first Davis Cup in 1953 when they took on the Netherlands as Ceylon A first round elimination, kept the nation away for two years until they appeared in the Eastern Asia Zone. In 1958, the team took their first win in Davis Cup history by defeating Malaysia at Singapore. This was their only win until 1966 when they once again defeated Malaysia to make into the Zone B final losing to India 5-0. In 1983, they made it to the quarterfinals of the Eastern Zone after a win over Hong Kong but they continue to struggle and soon was put in the lower division when the Asia-Oceania draw was split into two. 1953 Davis Cup
The 1953 Davis Cup was the 42nd edition of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 24 teams entered the Europe Zone, 6 teams entered the America Zone, and India Davis Cup team, India was the sole competitor in the Eastern Zone. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. Sri Lanka Fed Cup Team
The Sri Lanka Fed Cup team represents Sri Lanka in Fed Cup tennis competition and are governed by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association. They have not competed since 2001 with the exception of the 2008 tournament. History Sri Lanka competed in its first Fed Cup in 1990. Their best result was reaching the final qualifying round in 1992 and 1993. In 2007, Sri Lanka were scheduled to compete in the Asia/Oceania Zone Group II in Christchurch, New Zealand, but, together with Syria, withdrew because of a terrorist threat. After competing in 2008, Sri Lanka were listed for the 2009 Asia/Oceania Zone Group II, but did not take part. Harshana Godamanna (born 31 October 1985) is a Sri Lankan tennis player. Godamanna has regularly represented Sri Lanka in the Davis Cup since making his debut in 2002 against Jordan. With a world ranking of #811 in 2008, Godamnana became and still remains the highest ranked tennis player in Sri Lankan history. As of 2016, he currently holds the record for the most singles victories by any Sri Lankan player in Davis Cup history, twice leading the team to the Asia/Oceania Group II during his career.
