Vallathol Narayana Menon (Malayalam: വള്ളത്തോൾ നാരായണ മേനോൻ) (16 October 1878 – 13 March 1958) was a Malayalam poet and one of the Malayalam triumvirate poets, triumvirate of modern Malayalam poetry, along with Kumaran Asan, Asan and Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer, Ulloor. The honorific Mahākavi (great poet) was applied to him in 1913 after the publication of his ''Mahakavya'' ''Chitrayogam''. He was a nationalist poet and wrote a series of poems on various aspects of the Indian freedom movement. He also wrote against the caste system, the tyranny of the British and Brahmanas and other social orthodoxies. He founded the Kerala Kalamandalam and is credited with revitalising the traditional Keralite dance form known as Kathakali. Early life Vallathol was born in Chennara, Mangalam, Tirur, Mangalam, Tirur, in Malappuram District, Kerala, as the son of Kadungotte Mallisseri Damodaran Elayathu and Kuttipparu Amma.

Mangalam is a coastal village in Tirur Taluk, Malappuram district, Kerala, India. The village is located south-west to the town of Tirur, away from Ponnani, and south to Tanur, Malappuram, Tanur. Kootayi, known for its picturesque beach, is an important town in the jurisdiction of Mangalam Grama Panchayat. History Mangalam was a part of the Kingdom of Tanur, ''Vettathunad'' in the medieval period, like most of the other villages in the Tirur Taluk. ''Vettathunad'', also known as the Kingdom of Tanur, was a coastal city-state kingdom in the Malabar Coast. It was ruled by the ''Vettathu Raja'', who was a dependent of the Zamorin of Calicut. ''Vettathunad'' was known for its trade relationship with the Arabs, Arab merchants in the medieval period. The Kshatriya family of the ''Vettathu Rajas'' became extinct with the death of the last ''Raja'' on 24 May 1793. It was a part of the Malabar District during the British Raj, British rule.
