''Squawk'' is the second studio album by the heavy metal band Budgie. It was released in September 1972 on Kapp Records. The album was certified Gold in 1973. The cover art was done by Roger Dean. Budgie (band)
Budgie were a Welsh heavy metal music, heavy metal band from Cardiff. The band formed in 1967, and the following year recorded a demo; in 1971, their first album (of blues-oriented hard rock), produced by Rodger Bain, was released by MCA Records, MCA. The band, a classic power trio with the occasional keyboard player, released ten albums, with MCA, A&M Records, A&M, and RCA Records, RCS, between 1971 and 1982, attracting a fair number of fans and achieving modest commercial success. William Roger Dean (born 31 August 1944), known as Roger Dean, is an English artist, designer, and publisher. He began painting posters and album covers for musicians in the late 1960s. The groups for whom he did the most art are the English rock bands Yes and Asia. The covers often feature exotic fantasy landscapes. His work has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide. Early life William Roger Dean was born on 31 August 1944 in Ashford, Kent. His mother studied dress design at Canterbury School of Art before her marriage and his father was an engineer in the British Army. He has three siblings, brother Martyn and sisters Penny and Philippa. Much of Dean's childhood was spent in Greece, Cyprus, and, from age 12 to 15, Hong Kong, so his father could carry out army duties. Dean was very keen on natural history as a child, and Chinese landscape art and feng shui became particular influences on him during his time in Hong Kong. Raymond Anthony Phillips is a Welsh drummer, best known as the original drummer for the rock band Budgie. He left the band in November 1973. Phillips formed his own band in the mid-1970s known as Ray Phillips Woman. When former Budgie guitarist Tony Bourge joined the band in the early 1980s, they became known as simply Woman. In 1982 he rejoined Bourge and formed Tredegar Tredegar (pronounced , ) is a town and community situated on the banks of the Sirhowy River in the county borough of Blaenau Gwent, in the southeast of Wales. John Burke Shelley (10 April 1950 – 10 January 2022) was a Welsh musician, best known as the lead vocalist and bassist of the rock band Budgie. Musical career In 1967, Cardiff-born Shelley co-founded the band Hills Contemporary Grass with Tony Bourge on guitar and vocals and Ray Phillips on drums. The following year they changed their name to Budgie. Shelley is often compared to Rush bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee, as they both share the position of bassist/vocalist in power trio bands, both have distinctive high pitched singing voices, and during the mid to late 1970s they bore a striking resemblance to one another, with long straight hair and large glasses. Both vocalists possessed a high tenor vocal range, but unlike Lee, who is a fingerstylist, Shelley played bass with a guitar pick. Rockfield Studios is a residential recording studio located in the Wye Valley just outside the village of Rockfield, Monmouthshire, Wales. It was originally founded in 1963 by brothers Kingsley and Charles Ward. Facilities Rockfield is a two-studio facility consisting of The Coach House and The Quadrangle.
