Squan Song Stakes
The Squan Song Stakes is a race for Thoroughbred race horse, horses held in early November at Laurel Park (racecourse), Laurel Park in Maryland. The ungraded stakes race is open to three-year-olds, is run at one mile on the dirt, and offers a purse of $75,000. This race is named for Squan Song (born 1981), who was a four-time Maryland Bred champion, from 1984 to 1987 and earned "Horse-of-the-Year" honors in 1985. A winner of 18 of her 36 career starts, with 12 placements (ten in stakes races), the mare earned $898,444, placing her fourth on the all-time list of top Maryland-bred money winners at the time of her retirement. She was sold by her breeder Linda Green, for $125,000 as a weanling at Keeneland. Laurel Park Racecourse
Laurel Park, formerly Laurel Race Course, is an American thoroughbred racetrack located just outside Laurel, Maryland which opened in 1911. The track is miles in circumference. Its name was changed to "Laurel Race Course" for several decades until returning to the "Laurel Park" designation in 1994. History Laurel Park Racecourse opened October 2, 1911 under the direction of the Laurel Four County Fair. In 1914, New York businessmen and prominent horsemen, Philip J. Dwyer and James Butler purchased the track and appointed Matt Winn as the general manager. In 1918 the field was used by Army Engineers as a training camp before deployment to France. In 1946, a stable fire broke out with 60 horses saved. In 1947, the Maryland Jockey Club, which owned Timonium and Pimlico, purchased Laurel Park from the Butler estate with the idea of shifting the Pimlico meeting to Laurel. Laurel, Maryland
Laurel is a city in Maryland, United States, located midway between Washington and Baltimore on the banks of the Patuxent River. While the city limits are entirely in northern Prince George's County, outlying developments extend into Anne Arundel, Montgomery and Howard counties. Founded as a mill town in the early 19th century, Laurel expanded local industry and was later able to become an early commuter town for Washington and Baltimore workers following the arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1835.
