Spycatcher (TV Series)
''Spycatcher'' was a BBC television series, starring Bernard Archard, which ran from 1959 to 1961. It was based on the real-life activities of Dutch counterintelligence officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Oreste Pinto (once called "the greatest living authority on security"), who specialised in the interrogation of suspected spies during World War II and had later published his memoirs under the title ''Spy Catcher''. Bernard Archard
Bernard Joseph Archard (20 August 1916 – 1 May 2008) was an English actor who made many film and television appearances. Early life and career Archard was born in Fulham, London, where his father Alfred James Aloysius who was born in Marylebone was a jeweller. Bernard's paternal grandfather Alfred Charles Archard and great grandfather Henry Archard were clockmakers, watchmakers and jewellers in Mayfair, London during the 1800s. He was the maternal grandson of James Matthew Littleboy, Mayor of Fulham, 1906–07. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and in summer 1939 he appeared in the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park, London, production of ''Twelfth Night''. As a conscientious objector during the Second World War, he worked on Quaker land. Television Archard's first major television role, reprising the like-titled radio show, was playing Lt Col. Oreste Pinto (9 October 1889 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands – 18 September 1961 in London, England) was a Dutch counterintelligence officer and Lieutenant-Colonel. His activities during the Second World War, in which he worked with MI5 interrogating refugees to England, resulted in the capture of eight spies. Career During the Second World War, Pinto was an MI5 interrogator. He interviewed over 30,000 immigrants to the UK at the euphemistically named "London Reception Centre" in the Royal Victoria Patriotic Building in Wandsworth. In 1952, Pinto published two books, ''Spy-catcher'' and ''Friend or Foe?'' These formed the basis of the 1959-1961 BBC television series ''Spycatcher'', and also an earlier BBC Radio series, in both of which he was portrayed by Bernard Archard. J & L Randall Ltd was a British toy manufacturer, based in Potters Bar, which was in Middlesex until 1965 and then in Hertfordshire. The company flourished in the 1950s and 1960s and placed regular advertisements in Meccano Magazine. It was one of the main competitors to Mamod for models of stationary steam engines. The company used two trading names: * Merit for general toys * SEL (Signalling Equipment Ltd) for technical toys, e.g. electric motors, steam engines and student microscopes. It is believed that the term "signalling equipment" originally related to items such as Morse keys and sounders. In 1978 the company was bought by Letraset for 12.5 million pounds.
