Spruce Head is an unincorporated village in Knox County, Maine, United States. The community is located on Penobscot Bay and Maine State Route 73 south of Rockland. Spruce Head has a post office with ZIP code 04859, which opened on March 4, 1880. The village of Spruce Head lies partly in the township of South Thomaston and partly in the township of St. George and is connected by a bridge to Sprucehead Island, which is entirely within the borders of South Thomaston. The island faces the Muscle Ridge Islands to the east across a channel. Seal Harbor is a well-protected anchorage formed by the southern shore of Sprucehead Island, the eastern shores of Patten Point and Rackliff Island, and the northern shores of Norton Island and Whitehead Island. Rockland, Maine
Rockland is a city in Knox County, Maine, in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the town population was 6,936. It is the county seat of Knox County. The city is a popular tourist destination. It is a departure point for the Maine State Ferry Service to the islands of Penobscot Bay: Vinalhaven, North Haven and Matinicus. History Abenaki Indigenous People called it Catawamteak, meaning "great landing place." In 1767, John Lermond and his two brothers from Warren built a camp to produce oak staves and pine lumber. Thereafter known as Lermond's Cove, it was first settled about 1769. When in 1777 Thomaston was incorporated, Lermond's Cove became a district called Shore village. On July 28, 1848, it was set off as the town of East Thomaston. Renamed Rockland in 1850, it was chartered as a city in 1854. Rockland developed rapidly because of shipbuilding and lime production. Wilbert Snow
Charles Wilbert "Bill" Snow (April 6, 1884 – September 28, 1977) was an American poet, educator and politician. He served as the 75th Governor of Connecticut. He generally went by the name Wilbert or Bill Snow, or formally as C. Wilbert Snow. Early life Snow was born on Whitehead Island, Maine. He grew up in Whitehead Island and in neighboring Spruce Head Village. At the age of 14, Snow left school to become a lobster fisherman; he returned to school three years later after moving to Thomaston, Maine. After graduating, he began teaching in a one-room elementary school while studying at Bowdoin College. Bowdoin's President, William Dewitt Hyde helped Snow attain the scholarship he needed to finance his studies. At Bowdoin, Snow was on the debate team and editor of "The Quill", the campus literary magazine. Career Snow earned his bachelor's degree from Bowdoin in 1907, receiving Phi Beta Kappa honors. Maine Coast Heritage Trust
The Maine Coast Heritage Trust is a nonprofit land conservation organization. Its conservation partner is the Maine Land Trust Network, which is one of its programs. Formation In 1969, Margaret Rockefeller learned from the staff at Acadia National Park that conservation easements could be used to protect the natural scenery of islands in a portion of the Gulf of Maine from Penobscot Bay to Schoodic Point. A precedent for this conservation action existed along the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway in the Appalachian Highlands of Virginia and North Carolina where conservation easements had been acquired in the 1930s-40s by the National Park Service to preserve natural scenery. With the encouragement of her husband, David Rockefeller, and participation by Thomas Dudley Cabot, Margaret Rockefeller formed the nonprofit Maine Coast Heritage Trust in 1970 to assist island owners who might choose to donate conservation easements to Acadia National Park.
