Sprintermästaren
Sprintermästaren (literally: "The Sprint Champion") is an annual international Group One harness event for trotters. It is held at Halmstad Racetrack in Halmstad, Sweden, and is a stakes race for 4-year-olds. The purse in the 2011 final was ≈US$288,000 (€200,000), of which the winner Orecchietti won half. The event is sometimes referred to as "Sweden's Hambletonian". Racing conditions From the beginning, Sprintermästaren was open only for Swedish four-year-old trotters. In 2002, the conditions were changed and the event has since then been open for foreign four-year-olds as well. The distance, one mile, has been the same since the beginning of the event in 1971. The final of the event is preceded by a number of elimination races, taking place the same day. Since 1995, the number of elimination heats has been three per year. Nuncio (horse)
Nuncio (foaled in Hanover, Pennsylvania, 17 April 2011) is a dark racing trotter by Andover Hall out of Nicole Isabelle by Lindy Lane. Nuncio is owned and trained by Stefan Melander at Åby-Farm, Enköping, Sweden. With Swedish driver Örjan Kihlström, Nuncio won the most prestigious harness race in Scandinavia, the Swedish Elitloppet at Solvalla, on the 29th day of May, 2016, carrying a 3 million Swedish kronor ($360.000) first prize purse. Furthermore, Nuncio has won several other races, most prominent of which are Kentucky Futurity (2014), Yonkers Trot (2014), Sprintermästaren (2015), the Swedish Breeders Crown (2015), Jubileumspokalen (2016) and Sundsvall Open Trot (2016). Stefan Melander
Bertil Stefan Melander (born 23 November 1957 in Spånga, Stockholm County) is a Swedish harness racing horse trainer and driver based at Åby-Farm in Enköping, Sweden. Among the horses he has trained are top trotters Scarlet Knight, Iceland, Gigant Neo and Nuncio. Together with these and other horses, Melander has won numerous major races, including Elitloppet (two times), Hambletonian Stakes (once) and Prix d'Amérique (once). When he won Hambletonian Stakes at Meadowlands Racetrack with Scarlet Knight in August 2001 Melander became the first horseman to bring a U.S.-breed trotter trained and developed in Europe to the U.S. and win the Hambletonian. Halmstad () is a port, university, industrial and recreational city at the mouth of the Nissan river, in the province of Halland on the Swedish west coast. Harness racing is a form of horse racing in which the horses race at a specific gait (a trot or a pace). They usually pull a two-wheeled cart called a sulky, or spider, or chariot occupied by a driver. In Europe, and less frequently in Australia and New Zealand, races with jockeys riding directly on saddled trotters ( in French) are also conducted. Standardbred
The Standardbred is an American horse breed best known for its ability in harness racing, where members of the breed compete at either a trot or pace. Developed in North America, the Standardbred is recognized worldwide, and the breed can trace its bloodlines to 18th-century England. They are solid, well-built horses with good dispositions. Group One
Group One, Group 1, Grade I or G1 is the term used for the highest level of Thoroughbred and Standardbred stakes races in many countries. In Europe, the level of races for Thoroughbred racing is determined using the Pattern races, Pattern race system introduced in 1971 and monitored by the European Pattern Committee. To attain or maintain a Group One status, the average rating for the first four finishers in the race must be 115 or higher over a three-year period. The International Federation of Horseracing Authorities works to ensure consistent international standards. Group One races may only be restricted to age groups or a stipulated sex: they should not be restricted to horses bred in a certain country (though there are regional exceptions to this rule). Sören Nordin
Ernst Sören Nordin (5 September 1917, in Forsa, Hälsingland – 6 September 2008) was a Swedish harness racing driver and trainer who later started a stable in America. Nordin won 3,221 races in 10 different countries as a driver, he won the Swedish Trotting Derby 11 times – still a record. In 1950, Nordin won the ''Prix d'Amérique'', and in 1953 the ''Elitloppet''. 21 times, Nordin was the champion driver at Solvalla racetrack in Stockholm, Sweden's premier track. In 1981, he moved to the United States to set up the Team Nordin stable together with his son, Jan, training their trotters during the winter at Pompano Park's training center.
