Sprang-Capelle
Sprang-Capelle is a former municipality in the North Brabant province of the Netherlands. It was formed in 1923 as a merger of the municipalities of Sprang, Vrijhoeve-Capelle and 's Grevelduin- Capelle. Therefore Sprang-Capelle consists of three villages: 's Grevelduin-Capelle, Vrijhoeve-Capelle and Sprang. In 1997 the municipality of Sprang-Capelle was added to the municipality of Waalwijk. Waalwijk
Waalwijk () is a municipality and a city in the southern Netherlands. It had a population of in and is located near the motorways A59 and N261. The villages of Capelle, Vrijhoeve-Capelle, Sprang (the former municipality of Sprang-Capelle) and Waspik together with the city of Waalwijk form the municipality of Waalwijk. The city has an old town center, which has recently been modernized. Sprang (Netherlands)
Sprang is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Waalwijk, about 12 km north of Tilburg. History The village was first mentioned in 1331 as Spranc, and is a water name (from the same root word as spring). Sprang is a road village which developed after William III, Count of Holland had awarded concessions to excavated the peat in the area in 1301. The Dutch Reformed church dates from around 1400. The tower was added in the late 15th century. The church was supposed to be much bigger. A part of the tower collapsed in 1612 and was not repaired until 1911. The grist mill Dye Sprancke was built around 1747. From 1930 onwards, the wind mill started to be used less and began to deteriorate. In 1958, it was bought by the municipality and has been restored several times. It operates on a voluntary basis. Sprang was home to 1,526 people in 1840. Vrijhoeve-Capelle
Vrijhoeve-Capelle is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Waalwijk, about 10 km north of Tilburg. History The village was first mentioned in 1523 as "ter Capelle in die Vrie Houven", and means "piece of land free of taxation near Capelle". Vrijhoeve-Capelle developed in the Middle Ages near the peat excavation area on the border of Holland and the Duchy of Brabant. Huis Zuidewijn is a former estate. The central part and the left wing date from the late-16th century. The right wing was added in the 17th century. The estate was modified and extended in 1763. Vrijhoeve-Capelle was home to 444 people in 1840. In 1886, a railway station was built on the Lage Zwaluwe to 's Hertogenbosch railway line. It closed in 1950 and the building was demolished the same year. Vrijhoeve-Capelle was a separate municipality until 1923, when it became part of Sprang-Capelle. Capelle
Capelle (also ''Kapelle'') is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located about 6 km west of Waalwijk. The village was first mentioned in 1257 as Capella, and means chapel. The original village was flooded in the St. Elizabeth's flood (1421), St. Elizabeth's flood of 1421. The Dutch Reformed church dates from 1750 and has a wooden domed tower. Capelle was home to 144 people in 1840. Capelle was a separate municipality until 1923, when it merged with Sprang and Vrijhoeve-Capelle. They formed the new municipality of Sprang-Capelle, which existed until 1997. The village was flooded during the North Sea flood of 1953 and 42 people died. The municipality decided not to rebuilt the village. Since 1997 Capelle is part of the municipality of Waalwijk.
