Sportsman Park was a ballpark located in Greenville, Mississippi, United States. It was home to the Greenville Bucks, Greenville Buckshots and Greenville Tigers, all minor league baseball teams, from 1947 to 1955. Greenville is a city in and the county seat of Washington County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 34,400 at the 2010 census. It is located in the area of historic cotton plantations and culture known as the Mississippi Delta. History Early history This area was occupied by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Greenville Bucks
The Greenville Bucks or sometimes Buckshots were a Cotton States League baseball team in Greenville, Mississippi that existed from 1922 to 1955. They were affiliated with the Memphis Chicks (Southern Association), Memphis Chicks in the 1930s, the New York Yankees in the 1940s and the Detroit Tigers in the 1950s. Their home fields included High School Park, Recreation Park, and Sportsman Park (Greenville), Sportsman Park. The writer Shelby Foote followed the Bucks as a youth, and recalls this in interviews in Ken Burns' 1994 documentary ''Baseball (TV series), Baseball''. The Mississippi Delta, also known as the Yazoo–Mississippi Delta, or simply the Delta, is the distinctive northwest section of the U.S. state of Mississippi (and portions of Arkansas and Louisiana) that lies between the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers. Negro League
The Negro leagues were United States professional baseball leagues comprising teams of African Americans and, to a lesser extent, Latin Americans. The term may be used broadly to include professional black teams outside the leagues and it may be used narrowly for the seven relatively successful leagues beginning in 1920 that are sometimes termed "Negro Major Leagues". In the late 19th century, the baseball color line developed in professional baseball, excluding African Americans from league play. In 1885, the Cuban Giants formed the first black professional baseball team. House Of David (commune)
The House of David (formally The Israelite House of David) is a religious group founded in Benton Harbor, Michigan, in March 1903. It was co-founded by spouses Benjamin Purnell (1861-1927) and Mary Purnell (1862-1953). The Purnells claimed to be the successors to Joanna Southcott (1750 –1814), an English woman who had built a following as a self-described religious prophetess. The community flourished in the 1910s, but declined and split in various factions in the 1920s, after Benjamin Purnell was accused of sexual immorality.
