Reading is home to a number of professional sports teams and various amateur sports clubs. Football Reading is the home of Reading Football Club, an association football club nicknamed ''The Royals'', formed in 1871. Formerly based at Elm Park, the club plays at the 24,161 capacity Madejski Stadium, named after chairman Sir John Madejski. After winning the 2005–06 Football League Championship with a record of 106 points, Reading F.C. spent two seasons in the Premier League before being relegated to The Championship. During their Premier League first season, they fractionally missed-out on UEFA Cup qualification. Reading Rowing Club
Reading Rowing Club is a rowing club, on the River Thames in England, on the Berkshire bank at Reading close to the town centre just above Caversham Bridge, the westerly bridge in the town on the reach above Caversham Lock. The club was founded in 1867 at Reading where there had been an interest in rowing for several years. After its foundation the club revived the Reading Amateur Regatta and has been the driving force behind it ever since. The club was particularly successful at Henley Royal Regatta in the 1930s. Membership and activities The only non-academic rowing club in Reading, Goring Gap Rowing Club is the nearest such club and is a semi-rival, in the west of Mapledurham, as that club take part in events for the non-racing, recreational side of the sport. The Women's England Hockey League is a field hockey league organised by England Hockey that features women's teams from England. From 2011-2020 it was sponsored by Investec and was referred to as the Investec Women's Hockey League. Format Regular season There are 62 teams in the league, the top tier consists of a Premier Division of 12 teams. Below this is tier two, which consists of two ten team Division One regional teams (North and South). The third tier consists of three regional conferences North, West, and East, all consisting of ten teams. The teams play each other home and away during an 18 week season from September to April. The league has a winter break between December and February. At the end of the season there are a series of play-offs that decide which teams are promoted and relegated and which team finish as champions. Reading Hockey Club is a field hockey club based at Sonning Lane in the English town of Reading. It is one of the most successful clubs in the United Kingdom with National League and Cup honours. The Men's First Team play in the Men's England Hockey League and the Ladies 1st XI team play in the Women's England Hockey League. RHC runs 11 men's teams, 6 ladies teams and has a flourishing junior section. The ages of players range from 5 to 70+ years old. The National Basketball League, or NBL for short, is a league competition representing semi-professional and amateur basketball clubs from England and Wales. It forms levels 2 to 4 on the British basketball pyramid, in line with the Scottish Basketball Championship, sitting directly below the top tier British Basketball League. The Reading Rockets are an English semi-professional basketball club based in the town of Reading, England. Founded in 1997, the Rockets compete in NBL Division 1, the second tier of the British basketball system. History The Rockets were formed in 1997 by current owner Gary Johnson together with his son Matt, starting in Division 3. The club won promotion at the first attempt, and in the National Basketball League reorganisation of 2000, England Basketball replaced Division 1 with the eight-team NBL Conference as the second-tier.
