There is a variety of sports in Edmonton played professionally, as amateurs, or recreationally. Sports teams Current teams Baseball Baseball in Edmonton dates back to 1884 when the Edmonton Legislatures came to play. 27 years later in 1907 the team changed its name to the Edmonton Grays until 1909, the name had become the Edmonton Eskimos for two years. Then in 1912, they changed to the Edmonton Gray Birds for only two years. The team would change its name for the last time, back to the Eskimos for almost 35 years. Alongside the Eskimos were the Edmonton Drakes, Lloydminster Meridians, Edmonton Cubs, Edmonton Navy Cardinals Edmonton Dodgers and the Edmonton Oilers team which existed in 1964. Edmonton Eskimos
The Edmonton Elks are a professional Canadian football team based in Edmonton, Alberta. The club competes in the Canadian Football League (CFL) as a member of the league's West Division and plays their home games at the Brick Field at Commonwealth Stadium. The Elks were founded in 1949 as the Edmonton Eskimos and have won the Grey Cup championship fourteen times (including a three-peat between 1954 and 1956 and an unmatched five consecutive wins between 1978 and 1982), most recently in 2015. Edmonton Prospects
The Edmonton Prospects are a dormant collegiate summer baseball team based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. They play in the Western Canadian Baseball League. The team was founded in 2005 as the Edmonton Big River Prospects but moved to the Edmonton suburb of St. Albert after only one year of use of Telus Field with the Edmonton Cracker-Cats of the Northern League. They took a leave of absence from the WMBL for the 2008 season before returning in 2009 under their current name. Prior to the 2012 season they played out of John Fry Park on the south side of Edmonton. In 2012 the Prospects began playing out of Telus Field, which was renamed RE/MAX Field in 2017. The Prospects played the 2021 season as a road team. In 2022, they played most of their home games at Centennial Park Field 9 in Sherwood Park, and they plan to move to the Myshak Metro Ballpark in Spruce Grove when this new park opens. Edmonton Wildcats
The Edmonton Wildcats (formerly the Edmonton Maple Leafs) are Canadian football team based in Edmonton, Alberta. The Wildcats play in the Prairie Football Conference, which is part of the Canadian Junior Football League and competes for the league championship, the Canadian Bowl. The team was founded in 1948. History The team was founded as the Edmonton Maple Leafs in 1948, as a member of the Alberta Junior Football League (which was a conference in the Canadian Junior Football League). The Maple Leafs lost the 1951 National Final to the Hamilton Tigers. 1952 marked the second appearance of the Edmonton Wildcats in the national final, resulting in a narrow loss to Windsor AKO Fratmen. Canadian Junior Football League
The Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) is a national Major Junior Canadian football league consisting of 19 teams playing in five provinces across Canada. The teams compete annually for the Canadian Bowl. Many CJFL players move on to professional football careers in the Canadian Football League (CFL) and elsewhere. Formed May 8, 1974, the CJFL's formal mission statement is: "The Canadian Junior Football League provides the opportunity for young men aged 17 to 22 to participate in highly competitive post-high school football that is unique in Canada. Edmonton Huskies
The Edmonton Huskies are a Canadian Junior Football team based in Edmonton, Alberta. The Huskies play in the six-team Prairie Football Conference, which itself is part of the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) and competes annually for the national title known as the Canadian Bowl. History The Huskies were founded in 1954. In the 1960s the Huskies won 3 National Championships in a row and two in a row in 2004 and 2005 under the direction of head coach Mike Mclean. On October 30, 2004 the Huskies beat the Okanagan Sun 24-7 to win the Canadian Bowl. The very next year, the Huskies went on to beat the South Fraser Rams and then the St. Leonard Cougars to again win the national championship. Clarke Stadium
Clarke Stadium is a multipurpose facility located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The stadium was originally used for Canadian football. Over the years different sports have participated at the site. Presently, it is the home of the Edmonton Huskies and the Edmonton Wildcats of the Canadian Junior Football League. History The stadium was originally built in 1938 and named for then-Mayor Joseph Clarke. It was built on land deeded to the city for the purpose of constructing public sports fields by the federal government (Prime Minister Mackenzie King was a personal friend of Clarke). Canadian Premier League
The Canadian Premier League (CPL or CanPL; french: Première ligue canadienne, links=no) is a professional men's Association football, soccer league in Canada. At the top of the Canadian soccer league system, it is the country's primary national soccer league competition. The league consists of eight teams, from five of provinces and territories of Canada, Canada's ten provinces. Each team plays 28 games in the regular season which is followed by playoffs culminating in the Canadian Premier League Finals, CPL Finals. FC Edmonton was a Canadian professional soccer club based in Edmonton, Alberta. The club was founded in 2010 and competed in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 2011 to 2017. Canadian Elite Basketball League
The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) is a men's professional minor league basketball organization. The CEBL was founded in 2017 and began play in 2019 with six teams competing all owned and operated by ownership group Canadian Basketball Ventures. The league currently consists of ten teams from six different provinces, with four being from Ontario, two from Alberta and one each from the provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec, making the CEBL the largest professional sports league based entirely in Canada.
