Sport Clube Santa Maria (also in Capeverdean Crioulos of ALUPEC or ALUPEK and Sal) is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Santa Maria in the southern part of the island of Sal. Santa Maria is the third successful football (soccer) club on the island, having won 10 official regional titles. History The club was founded on April 1, 1937 and is the oldest on the island and was once the island's only club until 1948. It is one of the most titled teams in Sal regional division numbering 7. The club participated 8 times in the national level. Their greatest appearance was in the national finals where they lost to Académica do Mindelo in the 1989 edition. As Académico do Aeroporto won their only national title in 2003, Santa Maria qualified as a runner up in 2004, the club only had a draw and finished 5th with a point. The competition is organized by the Sal Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Sal, ARFS). The cup winner competed in the regional super cup final in the following season. 2009 Cape Verdean Football Championships
The 2009 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 30th of the competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. Its started on 16 April, earlier than the last season and finished on 11 June. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. Sporting would win their 8th title and fourth straight after defeating the city's rival Académica. This was the first final competition that featured two clubs from the same island as well as the same city, it happened the following season with Boavista. The Sal Island Opening Tournament (Portuguese: ''Torneio de Abertura da Ilha do Sal'', Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK: ''Turneiu de Abertura Idja du Sal'') is an opening tournament competition played during the season in the island of Sal, Cape Verde. The competition is organized by the Sal Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Sal, ARFS). The competition is similar to a league cup used in other countries. The first competition began in the 2000s. As the league later had two divisions, unlike other islands, the 2015 season had all of the clubs from the first and second divisions competed and extended to 11 rounds with several new clubs who started competing in official competitions. The group system was restored for the 2016-17 season and had two groups and each round, the leader of each group headed to the final and has two divisions..
