Spooner is a city in Washburn County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,573 at the 2020 census. The city is located mostly within the southwest corner of the Town of Spooner, with a small portion extending into the Town of Beaver Brook on the south, the Town of Bashaw on the southwest, and the Town of Evergreen on the west. The city's nickname, Crossroads of the North, is a reference to the city's location at the junction of two U.S. highways, 53 and 63, and State Highways 70 and 253. History Originally a town in the year 1889, and thereafter officially incorporated a city in the year 1909, Spooner's history is closely interlaced with that of railroad history. Spooner is a town in Washburn County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 677 at the 2000 census. The City of Spooner is located mostly within the southwest corner of the town. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 20.8 square miles (53.9 km2), of which, 18.9 square miles (48.8 km2) of it is land and 2.0 square miles (5.1 km2) of it (9.41%) is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 677 people, 259 households, and 203 families residing in the town. The population density was 35.9 people per square mile (13.9/km2). Spooner Bay is a 6-mile-wide bay on the coast of Enderby Land, lying 12 miles east of Freeth Bay in Alasheyev Bight. Plotted from air photos taken by Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) in 1956. Spooner Lake
Spooner Lake is a man-made reservoir located just north of the intersection of Highway 50 and Highway 28 near Spooner Summit, a pass in the Carson Range of the Sierra Nevada leading to Carson City, Nevada from Lake Tahoe. It is located in Lake Tahoe – Nevada State Park. History There are historical references to an "M. E. Spooner" and "Spooner & Co.'s House" in the area but the first documented eponymous reference was "a strip of productive land extends back from the lake for a distance of 2 miles, where it is called Spooner's Meadow". A dam constructed in 1927 to store irrigation water converted the eastern part of Spooner Meadow into a small lake. Since the 1930s Spooner Lake has also been used for recreational fishing. Spooner Summit
Spooner Summit is a mountain pass through the Carson Range, linking the Lake Tahoe Area to Carson City via US 50. The highest point of the pass is located just east of Spooner Lake just before the first set of curves when traveling eastbound. The pass also carried the Lincoln Highway over the Carson Range along its Sierra Nevada Southern Route before being renumbered as US 50 and rerouted near Johnson Pass. Spooner Township is a township in Lake of the Woods County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 281 at the 2000 census. History The township was named for Marshall Spooner, a state judge. Spooner was largely destroyed in the Baudette Fire of 1910. Spooner Township adjoined the Village of Spooner, which merged with Baudette in 1954. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 33.5 square miles (86.9 km), of which 33.5 square miles (86.7 km) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km) (0.21%) is water. Spooner (band)
Spooner was a Midwestern rock band formed in 1974 in Madison, WI, by keyboardist/vocalist Doug Erikson, songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Bob Olsen, and guitarist/vocalist Dave Benton originally as an acoustic/electric trio. Between 1975 and 1978, the group had undergone several line-up changes, including adding Butch Vig as a drummer. Drake Doremus (born March 29, 1983) is an American film director, screenwriter and producer best known for directing the films ''Like Crazy'' (2011), which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, '' Douchebag'' (2010) which was in Dramatic competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, and '' Equals'' (2015). Career Doremus studied directing at the AFI Conservatory, being the youngest fellow ever accepted into the film school. Doremus' mother, Cherie Kerr, was a founding member of the legendary L.A. Robert Michael Urich (December 19, 1946 – April 16, 2002) was an American film, television, and stage actor, and television producer. Over the course of his 30-year career, he starred in a record 15 television series. Urich began his career in television in the early 1970s. After guest stints and roles in short-lived television series, he won a co-starring role in the action/crime drama series ''S.W.A.T.'' in 1975.
