The Spokane Spokes were a minor league professional ice hockey team that operated from 1958-1959 in the Western Hockey League. After the 1958-1959 season the team was renamed Spokane Comets. Western Hockey League (minor Pro)
The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Many players have been drafted from WHL teams, and have found success at various levels of professional hockey, including the National Hockey League (NHL). Ronald Allan Attwell (February 9, 1935 – December 4, 2017) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played 22 games in the National Hockey League with the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers during the 1967–68 season. Emile Francis
Emile Percival Francis (September 13, 1926 – February 19, 2022), nicknamed "The Cat", was a Canadian ice hockey player, coach, and general manager in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the Chicago Black Hawks and New York Rangers from 1946 to 1952. After playing minor league hockey until 1960, he became the Rangers assistant general manager in 1962 and later general manager of the Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Hartford Whalers from 1964 to 1989. Francis led the Rangers to nine consecutive playoffs appearances (1967-75), but could not help deliver a Stanley Cup championship in five decades as a player, coach and executive. Cornelius Dennis "Mad Dog" Madigan (born October 4, 1934) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey defenceman notable for being the oldest rookie in National Hockey League (NHL) history. Dennis was born in Port Arthur, Ontario. Lionel Repka (7 February 1935 – 27 April 2015) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman, born in Edmonton, Alberta. Career Repka began his career with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WCJHL, and the Spokane Spokes, Seattle Americans and Edmonton Flyers of the WHL, before going to the IHL. Over eleven seasons in the International Hockey League (1958–69) Repka played 666 games – all with the Fort Wayne Komets. His number 6 is retired by Fort Wayne. He retired from hockey, sold insurance and died of cancer in 2015.
