Spokane Canaries
The Spokane Canaries (officially ''Spokane Hockey Club'') were a professional ice hockey team in Spokane, Washington. They played in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association for only one season in 1916–17. In the fall of 1916, the Canadian government expropriated the Patrick Arena in Victoria, British Columbia for war-time training purposes, making the arena unavailable for ice hockey use. It was decided to move the club based there, the Victoria Aristocrats, to Spokane, Washington. The team operated without an official nickname but were dubbed the "Canaries" by a local boy after seeing their yellow and purple uniforms. The team was a flop at the gate drawing poor crowds. As a result of this, on February 15, 1917, it was announced that most of the team's home games would subsequently be moved to the Seattle Ice Arena (home of the Seattle Metropolitans). Pacific Coast Hockey Association
The Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) was a professional ice hockey league in western Canada and the western United States, which operated from 1911 to 1924 when it then merged with the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL). The PCHA was considered to be a major league of ice hockey and was important in the development of the sport of professional ice hockey through its innovations. The league was started by the Patrick family, professional hockey players from Montreal, building new arenas in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia. After a few years of play, the league was accepted by the Stanley Cup trustees as being of a high enough standard that teams from its league were accepted for Stanley Cup challenges. Hec Fowler
Norman Boswell "Hec" Fowler (October 14, 1892 – July 30, 1987) was a two-sport athlete from Canada. He was a professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and National Hockey League between 1916 and 1925. He was also a soccer goalkeeper for Saskatoon Thistle. He was the last surviving former player of the Spokane Canaries. Playing career Fowler played for various senior league teams in his hometown of Saskatoon from 1909 to 1916, appearing in the Allan Cup playoffs in 1916, before turning professional with the Spokane Canaries of the PCHA in 1917. The Canaries, citing poor attendance, disbanded for the following season, and while Fowler had played poorly for Spokane, the defending Stanley Cup champion Seattle Metropolitans were confident enough to sign him as their goaltender. Bob Genge
Robert Allan Genge (December 20, 1889 – September 20, 1937) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. As a defenceman, he played with the Victoria Aristocrats and briefly the Spokane Canaries of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association from 1912 to 1921. Large in stature, Genge was known as a "dominating two-way player". He died from sepsis at Vancouver in 1937, aged 47. John Leo Falconbridge Cook (December 4, 1892 – September 3, 1964) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He played with the Spokane Canaries and Vancouver Millionaires of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, as well as the Regina Capitals and Edmonton Eskimos of the Western Canada Hockey League. Ken Mallen
William Kenneth Russell Mallen (October 4, 1884 – April 23, 1930) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He won two Stanley Cups in his career, in 1910 with the Ottawa Senators, and in 1915 with the Vancouver Millionaires. Mallen played over 150 games in his career. Playing career Born in Morrisburg, Ontario, Mallen played one season with Cornwall of the Federal Amateur Hockey League (FAHL) before turning professional with the Calumet Miners of the International Professional Hockey League (IPHL) in 1904. His first season, he scored 38 goals in 24 games to establish a goal-scorer's reputation. Sebastian John "Sibby" Nichols (August 10, 1884 – January 20, 1957) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played 110 games in various amateur and professional leagues, including the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association and Pacific Coast Hockey Association. Amongst the teams he played with were the Montreal Shamrocks, Vancouver Millionaires, Victoria Aristocrats, Spokane Canaries, and Seattle Metropolitans. He also played lacrosse with the Vancouver Lacrosse Club. Lloyd Tramblyn "Farmer" Cook (March 21, 1890 – October 9, 1964) was a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He played for the Vancouver Millionaires/Maroons and Spokane Canaries of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and for the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. He won the Stanley Cup in 1915 with the Millionaires and was named to the PCHA first all-star team three times. Early career Cook was born in Lynden, Ontario, in 1890. Point (ice Hockey)
In ice hockey, point has three contemporary meanings. Personal stat A point is awarded to a player for each goal scored or assist earned. The total number of goals plus assists equals total points. The Art Ross Trophy is awarded to the National Hockey League (NHL) player who leads the league in scoring points at the end of the regular season. Team stat Points are also awarded to assess standings (or rankings). Historically, teams were awarded two points for each win, one point for each tie and no points for a loss. Such a ranking system, implemented primarily to ensure a tie counted as a "half-win" for each team in the standings, is generally regarded as British and/or European in origin and as such adopted by the National Hockey League which was founded in Canada where leagues generally used ranking systems of British origin.
