In mathematics, the slope or gradient of a line is a number that describes both the ''direction'' and the ''steepness'' of the line. Splay (physiology)
In physiology, splay is the difference between urine threshold (the amount of a substance required in the kidneys before it appears in the urine) and saturation, or TM, where saturation is the exhausted supply of renal reabsorption carriers. In simpler terms, splay is the concentration difference between a substance's maximum renal reabsorption vs. appearance in the urine. Splay is usually used in reference to glucose; other substances, such as phosphate, have virtually no splay at all. Splay appears to occur because kidney nephrons do not have the same tubular maximum for glucose (TmG) therefore some nephrons may excrete before others and also because "the maximum reabsorption rate (or Tm) cannot be achieved until the amount/min of glucose being presented to the renal tubules is great enough to fully saturate the receptor sites". Talus (fortification)
In architecture, the talus is a feature of some late medieval castles, especially prevalent in crusader constructions. It consists of a battered (sloping) face at the base of a fortified wall. Feature The slope acts as an effective defensive measure in two ways. First, conventional siege equipment is less effective against a wall with a talus. Scaling ladders may be unable to reach the top of the walls and are also more easily broken due to the bending stresses caused by the angle they are forced to adopt. Siege towers cannot approach closer than the base of the talus, and their gangplank may be unable to cover the horizontal span of the talus, rendering them useless. Furthermore, defenders are able to drop rocks over the walls, which will shatter on the talus, spraying a hail of shrapnel into any attackers massed at the base of the wall. Splay is a term used in the manufacture of injection molded plastics to refer to off-colored streaking along the surface of a molded part. A cosmetic defect, it is often silvery in color and is sometimes called 'silver streak's. The most common cause of splay is moisture, which is caught in the resin inside the injection molding machine during the heating process. The moisture turns to steam when heated in the barrel of the machine, and become tiny gas bubbles that streak across the plastic as injection occurs. This causes the silvery pattern, or streaks, to appear on the surface of the plastic. Splay can be avoided by keeping moisture out of plastics and injection molding machines.
