Spitz
Spitz (derived from the German word ''spitz'' 'pointed') is a type of domestic dog characterized by long, thick, and often white fur, and pointed ears and muzzles. The tail often curls over the dog's back or droops. While all of the breeds resemble primitive dogs, smaller breeds resemble foxes, while larger breeds resemble jackals, coyotes, wolves, and even dingoes. The exact origins of spitz dogs are not known, though most of the spitzes seen today originate from the Arctic region or Siberia. The type was described as ''Canis pomeranus'' by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in his revision of ''Systema Naturae'' in 1788. Characteristics Spitzes are well suited to living in harsh northern climates. They often have an insulating, waterproof undercoat that is denser than the topcoat to trap warmth. Small, upright ears help to reduce the risk of frostbite, square proportions and thick fur that grows on the paws protects the dogs from sharp ice. Many spitz breeds, like the Japanese Akita ... Spitz, Austria
Spitz an der Donau is a market town in the district of Krems-Land in the Austrian state of Lower Austria, in the midst of the UNESCO World Heritage area Wachau, further down from Willendorf on the left bank of the Danube. The ferry across the Danube here is interesting in that it has no motor or sail: it is powered by rudder set against the river current, anchored to a cable above the river. The ferry carries passengers, bicycles, motorcycles, and automobiles. History Occupied since Celtic times, it was first mentioned in 830. A hill "Tausendeimerberg" (the "Hill of a Thousand Buckets") is so named because of the many grapes that grow there, for the Wachau valley, for which Spitz is in, is famous for them. The Late Gothic church to St. Maurice is famous for its ''Apostles'' (1380) and an altarpiece by Kremser Schmidt. To the south of Spitz is the famous fortress of Hinterhaus. In February 2008, Spitz made an appearance in domestic news following the poisoning of then–mayor Dr. ... Spitz (protein)
Spitz is a protein in fruit flies which is the major activator of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR). Function Spitz is produced as a transmembrane protein in the endoplasmic reticulum. There it associates with a cargo receptor called ''Star'' and is trafficked to the Golgi. In the Golgi, Spitz is cleaved by a protease called ''Rhomboid'', which releases Spitz to be trafficked to the cell membrane and released out of the cell. From here it can bind EGFR on the surface of other cells, activating the receptor. Alternatively, Spitz can be bound and inactivated by Argos, inhibiting EGFR activation. Spitz is responsible for activating signaling of the ''Drosophila'' epidermal growth factor receptor (DER) and is involved in the development of the embryos, eyes, and wings of fruit flies. Spitz can be sequestered and prevented from binding to DER by the protein Argos (Aos) which then inhibits the epidermal growth factor receptor pathway. Over-expression of epidermal growth factor ... Sharp Zaurus
The Sharp Zaurus is the name of a series of personal digital assistants (PDAs) made by Sharp Corporation. The Zaurus was the most popular PDA during the 1990s in Japan and was based on a proprietary operating system. The first Sharp PDA to use the Linux operating system was the SL-5000D, running the Qtopia-based Embedix Plus. The Linux Documentation Project considers the Zaurus series to be "true Linux PDAs" because their manufacturers install Linux-based operating systems on them by default. The name derives from the common suffix applied to the names of dinosaurs. History In September 1993, Sharp introduced the PI-3000, the first in the Zaurus line of PDAs, as a follow-on to Sharp's earlier Wizard line of PDAs (the Wizard also influenced Apple's Newton). Featuring a black and white LCD screen, handwriting recognition, and optical communication capabilities among its features, the Zaurus soon became one of Sharp's best selling products. The PI-4000, released in 1994, expan ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
