Spiro Malakellis
Spiro Malakellis (born 23 April 1968) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong Football Club, Geelong in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1980s and early 1990s, then with Port Adelaide Football Club in the South Australian Football League until the end of 1997. One of seven children, Malakellis was born in Walgett in 1968 and grew up in Portarlington, Victoria, Portarlington before moving to Geelong where he attended Geelong High School. The elder brother of Tony Malakellis, he started his career at Geelong Amateurs. After finishing with Geelong, Malakellis spent three seasons playing with Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL commencing in the 1995 premiership winning side with his brother Tony. 1988 VFL Draft
The 1988 VFL draft, held on the 9th of November 1988, was the third annual national draft held by the VFL/AFL, Victorian Football League (now known as the Australian Football League). It consisted of a pre-season draft and a national draft. In 1988 there were 112 picks to be drafted between 14 teams in the national draft. The Hawthorn Football Club received the first pick in the national draft, after receiving it from St Kilda Football Club, St Kilda in the first ever trade involving draft picks, in return for Paul Harding (Australian rules footballer), Paul Harding, Peter Russo and Robert Handley. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. Walgett
Walgett is a town in northern New South Wales, Australia, and the seat of Walgett Shire. It is near the junctions of the Barwon and Namoi Rivers and the Kamilaroi and Castlereagh Highways. In 2016, Walgett had a population of 2,145. In the 2016 Census, there were 6,107 people in the Walgett Local Government Area. Of these 52.9% were male and 47.1% were female. Tony Malakellis
Tony Malakellis (born 24 March 1970) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong and the Sydney Swans in the Australian Football League (AFL). He is the younger brother of Spiro Malakellis. Recruited locally, Malakellis made nine appearances for Geelong in 1990, all in the second half of the season. On his debut that year, against Carlton at Princes Park, Malakellis earned a Brownlow Medal vote for his 23 disposals and two goals. He played only five games in 1991 and didn't feature at all in the 1992 AFL season. Sydney secured his services in 1993 but he spent just one year at the club, before moving to South Australia and signing with Port Adelaide.
