''Spirits Aloft'' is a live album by bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Rashied Ali. It was recorded in February 2009 at Rutgers University in Camden, New Jersey, and was released by Porter Records in 2010. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Phil Freeman wrote: "On this recording, Grimes switches back and forth between bass and violin, and between somewhat conventional free jazz playing and atmospheric pieces during which neither he nor Ali offer any kind of melodic or rhythmic structure, instead improvising in a quietly intense way that forces the listener to wonder who's making what sound... When the bassist first reappeared on the scene, he was extremely rusty, but free jazz fans welcomed him back because of his pedigree. With this release, and a few before it, he proves that his chops have returned and he's every bit the player he was in the '60s." Henry Grimes
Henry Grimes (November 3, 1935 – April 15, 2020) was an American jazz double bassist and violinist. After more than a decade of activity and performance, notably as a leading bassist in free jazz, Grimes completely disappeared from the music scene by 1970. Grimes was often presumed to have died, but he was discovered in 2002 and returned to performing. Biography Early life and career Henry Alonzo Grimes was born in Philadelphia, to parents who both had been musicians in their youth. He took up the violin at the age of 12, and then began playing tuba, English horn, percussion, finally switching to the double bass at Mastbaum Technical High School. He furthered his musical studies at Juilliard and established a reputation as a versatile bassist by the mid-1950s. Rashied Ali
Rashied Ali, born Robert Patterson (July 1, 1933 – August 12, 2009) was an American free jazz and avant-garde drummer best known for playing with John Coltrane in the last years of Coltrane's life. Biography Early life Patterson was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His family was musical; his mother sang with Jimmie Lunceford. His brother, Muhammad Ali, is also a drummer, who played with Albert Ayler. Ali, his brother, and his father converted to Islam. Starting off as a pianist he eventually took up the drums, via trumpet and trombone. He joined the United States Army and played with military bands during the Korean War. After his military service, he returned home and studied with Philly Joe Jones, then toured with Sonny Rollins. Career Ali moved to New York in 1963 and worked in groups with Bill Dixon and Paul Bley. Free Jazz
Free jazz is an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, tones, and chord changes. Musicians during this period believed that the bebop, hard bop, and modal jazz that had been played before them was too limiting. They became preoccupied with creating something new and exploring new directions. The term "free jazz" has often been combined with or substituted for the term "avant-garde jazz". Europeans tend to favor the term "free improvisation". Others have used "modern jazz", "creative music", and "art music". The ambiguity of free jazz presents problems of definition. ''Live in Europe'' is a live album by American jazz ensemble Rashied Ali Quintet, led by drummer Ali, and featuring saxophonist Lawrence Clark, trumpeter Josh Evans, pianist Greg Murphy, and bassist Joris Teepe. Featuring two long performances of pieces by Ali's former bandmate James "Blood" Ulmer, it was recorded on November 2, 2007, at Jazz Happening in Tampere, Finland, and was issued in 2009 by Ali's label, Survival Records. The album's release, which occurred shortly before Ali's death, was celebrated by a live performance at New York's Zinc Bar. According to his widow, Patricia, "he was at the top of his game until his last day." Reception In a review for AllMusic, Alex Henderson called the album "a consistently absorbing document of Ali's Jazz Happening appearance," and stated that "both sides of Ali -- his avant-garde side and his post-bop side -- assert themselves with exciting, often explosive results."
