Spirit Music
''Spirit Music'' is a live album by pianist Marilyn Crispell. It was recorded at New York University and Soundscape in New York City in May 1981 and January 1982, and was released in 1983 by Cadence Jazz Records. On the album, Crispell is joined by violinist Billy Bang, guitarist Wes Brown, and drummer John Betsch. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Scott Yanow wrote: "Marilyn Crispell is one of the most significant piano voices of the avant-garde... This Cadence release... finds her leading her own trio... On one of the four lengthy improvisations heard on this set, guitarist Wes Brown makes the band a quartet. These stirring performances serve as a fine introduction to the passionate music of Marilyn Crispell." Marilyn Crispell
Marilyn Crispell (born March 30, 1947) is an American jazz pianist and composer. Scott Yanow described her as "a powerful player... who has her own way of using space... She is near the top of her field." Jon Pareles of The New York Times wrote: "Hearing Marilyn Crispell play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano... She is one of a very few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz." In addition to her own extensive work as a soloist or bandleader, Crispell is also known as a longtime member of saxophonist Anthony Braxton's quartet in the 1980s and '90s. ''Silent Tongues'' is a live album by Cecil Taylor on solo piano recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1974. It features Taylor's five-movement work "Silent Tongues", along with two encores. Cecil Taylor
Cecil Percival Taylor (March 25, 1929April 5, 2018) was an American pianist and poet. Taylor was classically trained and was one of the pioneers of free jazz. His music is characterized by an energetic, physical approach, resulting in complex improvisation often involving tone clusters and intricate polyrhythms. His technique has been compared to percussion. Referring to the number of keys on a standard piano, Val Wilmer used the phrase "eighty-eight tuned drums" to describe Taylor's style. Thomas Raphael Moon (born November 3, 1960) is an American saxophonist, author, and music critic. He is known for his book '' 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die''. He has won two Deems Taylor Awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Biography Moon studied music at the University of Miami, and played in the Maynard Ferguson Orchestra for about a year on tour. In the 1980s, he put his career as a musician on hold to focus on music journalism. He began writing about music in 1983. Soundscape Presents or simply Soundscape is a recording label in jazz and world music, a contributor to music festivals, and a promoter of creative arts education. Foundation Soundscape, was founded as a jazz club in New York City in 1979 by Verna Gillis, a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology. Committed to the ideals of multiculturalism, it aimed to present contemporary music and musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds. It provided one of the first multi-cultural performance spaces in New York City. ''Live in Soundscape'' is a 9-CD series on DIW which documents the early years, through 1984. John Betsch (born October 8, 1945) is an American jazz drummer. Biography Betsch was born in Jacksonville, Florida.
