Joseph Spiess (engineer)
Joseph Spiess (10 September 1838 – 31 March 1917) was a French engineer who filed a patent for a rigid airship in 1873, the year before Ferdinand von Zeppelin first outlined his own design. However, Spiess's machine was not actually constructed until 1913, and was the first and only French rigid airship. Biography Spiess was the son of a printer, in Mulhouse, Haut-Rhin département, in the Alsace region of France. He served as a warrant officer in the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 to 1871, and when Alsace-Lorraine was annexed by the German Empire, Spiess opted to retain his French nationality. Shortly before World War I, there was public pressure for France to emulate Germany's airship fleet, and construction of Spiess's airship, with state assistance, was started by Société Zodiac at the Aérodrome de Saint-Cyr-l'École. In the German Wehrmacht, Hauptfeldwebel (short: HptFw; address: ''Herr Hauptfeldwebel'') was not a rank but a position title, assignment or appointment, equivalent to the Commonwealth company sergeant major or U.S. company-level first sergeant. There was one such non-commissioned officer (NCO) in every infantry company, artillery battery, cavalry squadron, etc. He was the senior NCO of his subunit, but his duties were largely administrative and he was not expected to accompany his unit into an assault or a firefight. The Hauptfeldwebel had many nicknames, including ''Spieß'' ("Spear") and ''Mutter der Kompanie'' ("company mother"). Robert Spieß
Robert Cleon Spiess (17 February 1891 – 22 October 1982) also known as Robert Spies (anglicized name) was a German tennis player. He competed in two events at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Sweden. He was a quarter finalist in the men's doubles at the 1914 Wimbledon Championships partnered with Luis Maria Heyden. His biggest singles title wins were at the German International Covered Court Championships which he won two times in 1920 and 1926, and the German National Championships in 1912. He was active from 1910 to 1936 and won 6 career singles titles. Career Spiess played his first tournament in 1910 at the Geneva Spring Tournament. The same year he won his first title at the Caux International in Montreux against A. Félix Poulin. Mary Lou Spiess
Mary Lou Spiess ( – June 18, 1992) was an American disability advocate, teacher, and designer of disabled fashion. Biography Mary Lou Spiess was born Mary Lou Crump, around 1931. After graduating from Analy High School in 1947, she attended the College of the Pacific, and graduated in 1950. She married Harold Spiess in 1951. They had a son, and lived in Sebastopol, California when she contracted polio in 1955 at the age of 24. This left Spiess, in her own words, a quadriplegic. Before her sickness, Spiess was an elementary school teacher, and by 1960 she was able to successfully work from home as an elementary and secondary school level tutor for remedial reading, algebra and languages. This was despite having to sleep in an iron lung and being reliant upon daily use of a Mechanical ventilation#Intermittent abdominal pressure ventilator, pneumobelt. Rigid Airship
A rigid airship is a type of airship (or dirigible) in which the envelope is supported by an internal framework rather than by being kept in shape by the pressure of the lifting gas within the envelope, as in blimps (also called pressure airships) and semi-rigid airships. Rigid airships are often commonly called Zeppelins, though this technically refers only to airships built by the Luftschiffbau Zeppelin company. In 1900, Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin successfully performed the maiden flight of his first airship; further models quickly followed. Gesine Spieß
Gesine Spieß (1945–2016) was a German educationalist at the University of Applied Sciences in Erfurt (Fachhochschule Erfurt) where she specialized in gender studies. In 1988, she became the first women's representative in Düsseldorf where she developed a women's advancement plan for the city. She is also remembered as an expert in women in management and in policies for advancing gender equality. Gertrud Spiess (16 April 1914 in Basel – 14 July 1995 in Basel) was a Swiss politician of the Christian Democratic People's Party. She was a member of the National Council from 1975 to 1983.
