VEF Spidola ( lv, VEF Spīdola, russian: ВЭФ Спидола) was the first mass production, mass-produced transistor radio with short wave band in the Soviet Union. It was manufactured by the VEF factory in Riga, Latvia, since 1962. A small series under the name "Spidola" (''Спидола'' ПМП-60) was manufactured since 1960. It was named after the fictional witch Spīdola from the Latvian epic poem. The word "spidola" was a Generic trademark, genericised trademark for "transistor radio" for a long time in Russian language, Russian (other synonyms included "transistor"). In many cases, the Spidola was used to listen to Western stations (such as the ''Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, BBC, Deutsche Welle''). The criminal prosecution of at least one Soviet dissident involved confiscation of the Spidola as an "instrument of crime," but without specifying the "crime" committed with the confiscated Spidola. Ronis-class Submarine
The ''Ronis''-class submarines were built for the Latvian Navy in France in 1925. They were acquired by the Soviets in 1940 following the annexation of Latvia by the Soviet Union. They were scuttled in Liepāja in June 1941 as the Germans were about to capture the port. The hulls were raised in 1942 and scrapped. Design The boats were small coastal submarines built to a French design. Ronis means " seal" in the Latvian language, Spīdola is a character from the Latvian language poem ''Lāčplēsis''. Roberts Zīle (born 20 June 1958) is a Latvian economist and politician and Vice President of the European Parliament for the National Alliance, a free market national conservative political party in Latvia. In the seventh term of the European Parliament, he works in the European Conservatives and Reformists group; he is a member of European Conservatives and Reformists Group Executive and a member of the group Bureau.
