Spennymoor United
Spennymoor United Association Football Club was an association football club based in Spennymoor, County Durham, England. History Spennymoor United Association Football Club was formed in 1904 as an amalgamation of Spennymoor Town and Weardale Ironopolis. Spennymoor Town was itself an amalgamation of two church football teams in the town, St. Paul's and St. Andrew's in 1890. Weardale Ironopolis was a relatively new club formed in 1901 as a sporting interest for the workers of the Weardale Iron & Coke Works. The “Nops†had a short and successful history in the Croxdale & District League. Spennymoor United spent the 1904–05 season in the Mid Durham League and secured the use of The Brewery Field the following season. The Brewery Field had until that time, been the home of the renowned Tudhoe Rugby Club and had hosted several inter county rugby matches at the ground. The Northern Counties East Football League is a semi-professional English association football, football league. It has two divisions – Premier Division and Division One – which stand at the ninth and tenth levels of the English football league system, football pyramid respectively. Spennymoor is a town and civil parish in County Durham, England. It is south of the River Wear and is south of Durham. The civil parish includes the villages of Kirk Merrington, Middlestone Moor, Byers Green and Tudhoe. History Origins The land on which Spennymoor now stands was once a vast expanse of moorland covered with thorn and whin bushes (Spenny Moor). In 1336 its place-name was recorded as ''Spendingmor''. The name is probably derived from the Old English or Old Norse ''spenning'' and ''mÅr'', meaning a moor with a fence or enclosure. Another theory of the place-name's origin is from the Latin ''spina'', meaning thorn (possibly from the Roman influence at Binchester) combined with the Old English or Old Norse ''mÅr''. The Northern Premier League is an English football league that was founded in 1968. It has four divisions: the Premier Division (which stands at level 7 of the English football league system), Division One East, Division One West and Division One Midlands (which stand at level 8).
