Spencer Abbott (baseball)
Spencer Arthur Abbott (August 27, 1877 in Chicago – December 18, 1951 in Washington, D.C.) was a long-time minor league baseball player and manager, as well as a minor league umpire and major league coach and scout. Playing career Abbott played the majority of his career from 1901 to 1914, although he did not play in 1902 or 1913. In 1932, at the age of 54, he appeared in one game for the Portland Beavers, the team he was managing at the time, hitting a single. A first baseman for the majority of his career, although he pitched in a few games as well, Abbott hit below .250 with regularity, nearing the Mendoza Line on occasion. He hit over .250 only four times in 14 seasons: 1904 (.287), 1907 (.289), 1912 (.288) and 1932 (1.000). Umpiring career He was an umpire for part of the 1915 season in the Western League. The Charlotte Hornets were an American minor league baseball franchise based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The club was founded in 1901, and lasted in some form until 1973, capturing 11 league titles during its history. From 1937 to 1942 and 1946 to 1972, the Hornets were a farm system affiliate of the original Washington Senators franchise and its post-1960 successor, the Minnesota Twins. The Southern Association was a higher-level minor league in American organized baseball from 1901 through 1961. For most of its existence, the Southern Association was two steps below the Major Leagues; it was graded Class A (1902–1935), Class A1 (1936–1945) and Class AA (1946–1961). Although the SA was known as the Southern League through 1919, the later Double-A Southern League was not descended from the Southern Association; the modern SL came into existence in 1964 as the successor to the original ''South Atlantic'' ("Sally") League.
