Speed Skating At The 2010 Winter Olympics – Men's 500 Metres
The men's 500 metres speed skating competition of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics was held at Richmond Olympic Oval on 15 February 2010. Track maintenance issues Competition was stopped for approximately ninety minutes during the first run, due to concerns over the naturally deteriorating quality of the ice after so many skaters had raced on it and the seeming inability of resurfacing equipment to do anything about it. The two ice resurfacing machines prepared to maintain the surface of the ice track both malfunctioned. A reserve machine was employed, but it left the ice surface too rough and pitted to permit safe racing by the athletes. Finally, one of the original two machines was repaired sufficiently to fix the track. Richmond Olympic Oval
The Richmond Olympic Oval (french: Anneau olympique de Richmond) is an indoor multi-sports arena in the Canadian city of Richmond, British Columbia. The oval was built for the 2010 Winter Olympics and was originally configured with a speed skating rink. The venue has since been reconfigured and now serves as a community multi-sport park and includes two ice hockey rinks, two running tracks, a climbing wall, a rowing tank and a flexible area which can be used for, among other sports, basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer and table tennis. The Olympic bid called for the oval to be located on the grounds of Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Burnaby, but Richmond was instead selected in 2004. Although twice the price of the SFU alternative, the location was selected because the city offered to cover all costs exceeding $60 million. Mike Ireland
Michael James Grant Ireland (born 3 January 1974 in Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Canadian long track speed skater. Ireland specialises in the sprint distances (the 500 m and the 1000 m). He participated in the 500 m at the 1994 Winter Olympics (finishing 26th), the 500 m (6th) and 1000 m (14th) at the 2002 Winter Olympics and the 500 m (7th) at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Ireland was the 2001 World Sprint Champion, while winning several more medals at several World Championships (see the next section), and he also set a world record on the 1000 m (only to be broken 8 days later by compatriot Jeremy Wotherspoon). Lee Kyou-hyuk
Lee Kyou-hyuk (, born 16 March 1978) is a South Korean retired long track speed skater who specializes in the 500 and 1,000 meters. He was the 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011 World Sprint Speed Skating Champion and the 2011 World Champion for 500 m. He is one of four men to have won the World Sprint Speed Skating Championships four times. His first world sprint championship, in 2007, was his first International Championships medal after a 13-year top-level career. Dmitry Lobkov
Dmitry Vladimirovich Lobkov (russian: Дмитрий Владимирович Лобков; born 2 February 1981 in Murom) is a Russian speedskater who specialises in the shortest distances, with the 500 metres being his favourite. Career At the 2004 World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships in Seoul he achieved the silver medal at this distance, only allowing Jeremy Wotherspoon to be faster. He became Russian Sprint Champion three times in a row, and was, because of his recently shown progress, a favourite to win an Olympic medal in the 500 metres distance at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Tucker Fredricks
Tucker Fredricks (born April 16, 1984) is an American speed skater and the US record holder in the 500 meter event. He competed at the 2006, 2010, and 2014 Winter Olympics. Fredricks was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, where he graduated in 2002 from Joseph A. Craig High School. He began skating in 1994 when a friend of his father took him skating in lieu of playing hockey. He considers his greatest accomplishment to be winning the gold medal in 500m at the 2003 World Junior Championships. Ronald Mulder (born 27 February 1986) is a Dutch speed skater. He won bronze in the men's 500 metres event at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and finished sixth in the men's 500 metres event at the 2012 World Single Distance Championships. Jamie Gregg (born March 18, 1985, in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian long track speed skater. Gregg was ranked 10th in overall World Cup standings for the 2009–10 season. He is set to compete for Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics in the 500 m. At the Olympics, Gregg competed in the Richmond Olympic Oval where he finished 8th in the 500 m as the top North American skater, one spot ahead of Jeremy Wotherspoon.
