Speed skating at the 1988 Winter Olympics, was held from 14 to 28 February. Ten events were contested at Olympic Oval. For the first time, all the Olympic speed skating events were held at an indoor venue and the women contested a 5000-metre race, the longest distance contested by women in speed skating. Medal summary Medal table East Germany topped the medal table with three gold medals, and thirteen total. Until the 2014 Winter Olympics, the thirteen medals were won, the most by any country in speed skating in a single Games. The Netherlands at the 2014 Winter Olympics, Dutch passed that total with 23. The Netherlands' Yvonne van Gennip led the individual medal table with three golds, while Sweden's Tomas Gustafson was the most successful male skater, with two gold medals. Leo Visser
Leendert "Leo" Visser (born 13 January 1966) is a Dutch former speed skater, who in 1989 won the World Allround championships and European championships. At the 1988 Olympics in Calgary he won a silver medal in the 5000 m and a bronze medal in the 10 000 meter. Four years later, at the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, Visser won a bronze medal in both the 1,500 and the 5,000 metres, behind Norwegians Johann Olav Koss and Geir Karlstad. Nationally, he won the allround titles in 1988, 1989 and 1991, as well as four distance titles. After his career as a speed skater, Visser became a pilot and he is now captain on the Boeing 777 for Dutch airline KLM. In 2002, he was the chef de mission for the Dutch Olympic team. His wife, Sandra Voetelink Sandra Voetelink (born 7 August 1970) is a retired speed skater from the Netherlands who was active between 1988 and 1994. Gabi Zange
Gabriele Zange ( Schönbrunn, born 1 June 1961) is a retired East German speed skater who specialized in the long distances (3000 m and 5000 m), winning three Olympic bronze medals in these events in 1984 and 1988. In 1981 she won a European bronze medal in the 3000 m and later set a world record at the high-altitude rink of Medeo The Medeu ( kk, Медеу, ''Medeu''), is an outdoor speed skating and bandy rink. Andrea Ehrig-Mitscherlich
Andrea Ehrig ( Mitscherlich, also known as Schöne, born 1 December 1960) is a retired East German speed skater. She was one of the world's best long-distance skaters in the 1980s. A four-time Olympian, she won seven Olympic medals, including gold in the 3000 metres (as Andrea Schöne) at the 1984 Sarajevo Games. Career Ehrig was born Andrea Mitscherlich in Dresden, Saxony, East Germany. At the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck, as a 15-year-old, she won a silver medal in the 3000 m event, just one one-hundredth of a second ahead of Lisbeth Korsmo who won bronze. At the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid she came fourth in the 3000 metres. Karin Enke
Karin Voss ( Enke, formerly Busch ,Kania and Richter, born 20 June 1961) is a former speed skater, one of the most dominant of the 1980s. She is a three-time Olympic gold medallist, winning the 500 metres in 1980, the 1000 metres in 1984 and the 1500 metres in 1984. She won a total of eight Olympic medals. Short biography Karin Enke started her sport career as a figure skater at the club SC Einheit Dresden. Representing East Germany she came in ninth place at the European Figure Skating Championships in 1977. Later she changed to speed skating. Dominant on all distances (being reigning World Allround Champion and World Sprint Champion, and having won German Single Distance Championships titles on all five distances in 1983), Enke was the favourite for all four distances at the 1984 Winter Olympics of Sarajevo, but she won "only" two gold and two silver medals.
