Speed skating at the 1984 Winter Olympics was held from 9 to 18 February. Nine events were contested at Zetra Ice Rink. Medal summary Medal table East Germany topped the medal table with four gold medals, and eleven total, including a complete sweep of gold and silver medals in the four women's events. This was only the second Games in which the United States did not win a speed skating medal, and as of 2018, the only time since 1960 the Netherlands did not win a medal in the sport. Japan's Yoshihiro Kitazawa won his country's first Olympic medal in speed skating. East Germany's Karin Enke led the individual medal table, winning a medal in each of the women's events, finishing with two golds and two silvers. Canada's Gaétan Boucher was the most successful male skater, with two gold medals and a bronze. René Schöfisch (born 3 February 1962) is a German speed skater who competed for East Germany in the 1984 Winter Olympics. He was born in East Berlin. Gabriele Zange ( Schönbrunn, born 1 June 1961) is a retired East German speed skater who specialized in the long distances (3000 m and 5000 m), winning three Olympic bronze medals in these events in 1984 and 1988. Natalya Petrusyova
Natalya Anatolyevna Petrusyova (russian: Ната́лья Анато́льевна Петрусёва; born 2 September 1955) is a former speed skater. Short biography Natalya Petrusyova trained at Burevestnik. Competing for the Soviet Union, Petrusyova was a very successful skater – once Olympic Champion (on the 1,000 m), twice World Allround Champion, once World Sprint Champion, twice European Allround Champion, three times Soviet Allround Champion, twice Soviet Sprint Champion, and ten-time world record holder. Petrusyova was awarded the Order of Friendship of Peoples in 1980. After her speed skating career had ended, Petrusyova became the senior speed skating coach at the ''Committee for Physical Culture and Sports'' in Moscow. Andrea Ehrig-Mitscherlich
Andrea Ehrig ( Mitscherlich, also known as Schöne, born 1 December 1960) is a retired East German speed skater. She was one of the world's best long-distance skaters in the 1980s. A four-time Olympian, she won seven Olympic medals, including gold in the 3000 metres (as Andrea Schöne) at the 1984 Sarajevo Games. Career Ehrig was born Andrea Mitscherlich in Dresden, Saxony, East Germany. At the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck, as a 15-year-old, she won a silver medal in the 3000 m event, just one one-hundredth of a second ahead of Lisbeth Korsmo who won bronze. At the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid she came fourth in the 3000 metres. Four years later at the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo, competing under her first married name of Schöne, she won silver in both the 1000 and the 1500 m and became Olympic champion in the 3000 metres.
