The speckled smooth-hound (''Mustelus mento'') is a houndshark of the family Triakidae. It is found on the continental shelf of the eastern Pacific, between latitudes 0° and 54° S, at depths between . It can reach a length of . Collectively with certain other species of shark, it is known as "tollo". Description The speckled smooth-hound is a robust shark with a moderately long, blunt snout, small eyes, short mouth and molar-like teeth without cusps. The trailing edge of the dorsal fins have small, pointed projections. The pectoral fins are large and the pelvic fins moderately large. The caudal peduncle is short and the lower lobe of the tail fin is narrow and slightly curved. The maximum length is about with maturity being reached by males at about and females at about . Edward Drinker Cope
Edward Drinker Cope (July 28, 1840 – April 12, 1897) was an American zoologist, paleontologist, comparative anatomist, herpetologist, and ichthyologist. Born to a wealthy Quaker family, Cope distinguished himself as a child prodigy interested in science; he published his first scientific paper at the age of 19. Though his father tried to raise Cope as a gentleman farmer, he eventually acquiesced to his son's scientific aspirations. Cope married his cousin and had one child; the family moved from Philadelphia to Haddonfield, New Jersey, although Cope would maintain a residence and museum in Philadelphia in his later years. The demersal zone is the part of the sea or ocean (or deep lake) consisting of the part of the water column near to (and significantly affected by) the seabed and the benthos. ''Mustelus'', also known as the smooth-hounds, is a genus of sharks in the family Triakidae. The name of the genus comes from the Latin word ''mustela'', meaning weasel. It should not be confused with the genus name ''Mustela'', which is used for weasels. A smooth-hound can grow to 159 cm (5 ft. 3 in.) long and weigh more than 13 kg (29 lb). It is found on the continental shelves of the subtropical southwest Atlantic, from southern Brazil to northern Argentina, between latitudes 30° S and 44° S, at depths between 60 m to 195 m. Lobos De Tierra
Lobos de Tierra is a Peruvian island situated 19 km from the mainland close to the Illescas Peninsula and the boundary between the departments of Piura and Lambayeque regions. Its area is 16 km2, its approximate length is 10 km, and its approximate width is 3 km. Natural resources In 1863 the island was estimated to have guano deposits of almost 7 million metric tons, which were then exploited without any control. The number proved to be an overestimate and today that wealth has almost disappeared and the little remaining guano does not have the same quality as before. The climate of this island is very warm and is home to birds like kelp gulls, boobies ( Blue-footed, Nazca, and Peruvian), and Guanay cormorants.
