Special Police Units (Serbia)
The Special Police Units or Police Special Units ( sr, Posebne jedinice policije, italics=yes, PJP) was a special police force unit of Serbia's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP). It had several detachments and was part of the sector of the State Security Service. It was disbanded on 28 June 2001 when it was replaced by the re-establishment of the Gendarmery. Between 1994 and 1996 it was commanded by Obrad Stevanović. During the Kosovo War (1998–99), the force had an estimated 5,000 or 7,000 men. The PJP detachments were based at Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, Užice, Niš and Priština. It is believed that it was commanded by Obrad Stevanović, now the head of police. Its elite unit was the "Lightning" (''Munje'') unit, according to M. McAllester partly made up of "some of Yugoslavia's most dangerous criminals". Gendarmery (Serbia)
The Gendarmery ( sr, Жандармерија, Žandarmerija) is the national gendarmerie force of the Republic of Serbia. It is under the authority of the Police Directorate of the Serbian Ministry of Interior and was formed on 28 June 2001, after the disbandment of the Special Police Units (PJP). Gendarmery in Serbia existed in previous form from 1860 to 1920. As a special unit inside Serbian police, its role can be compared to those of Russian OMON and former Ukrainian Berkut units. As of 2017, Gendarmery consists of about 2,800 members. The Command of the Gendarmery is in Belgrade. The gendarmery's duties are both civilian and military, including securing the 'Ground Safety Zone' along the administrative line with Kosovo and providing disaster rescue teams (see below). State Security Service (FR Yugoslavia)
The State Security Service ( sr, Ресор државне безбедности, Resor državne bezbednosti; abbr. СДБ / SDB or РДБ / RDB) or simply State Security ( sr, Државна безбедност, Državna bezbednost; abbr. ДБ / DB), was the security agency within the Ministry of the Interior of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia tasked with protecting the country from internal threats. Ministry Of Internal Affairs (Serbia)
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Serbia ( sr, Mинистарство унутрашњих послова, Ministarstvo unutrašnjih poslova; abbr. MUP) or the Ministry of Interior, is a cabinet-level ministry in the Government of Serbia. The Ministry is responsible for local and national Police services with municipal and district branches throughout the country. Its core responsibilities include: crime prevention, criminal apprehension, investigations, customs and border control, counter-terrorism, anti-corruption, anti-narcotics and disaster relief. The ministry is also responsible for issuing passports and personal identification to citizens. The current minister is Bratislav Gašić, in office since 26 October 2022. As of August 2016, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has a total of 42,817 employees, of whom 28,266 are uniformed officers.
