''Speak Squeak Creak'' is the first album by Melt-Banana. It was first released in September 1994 by NUX Organization and re-issued by A-Zap in April 2001. ''Speak Squeak Creak'' was recorded by Steve Albini in a basement in Chicago in June/July 1994. It was produced by KK Null , known by his stage name KK Null, is a Japanese experimental multi-instrumentalist active since the early 1980s. Melt-Banana is a Japanese noise rock band that is known for playing extremely fast noise rock mixed with experimental, electronica and pop-based song structures. Since forming in 1992 the band has released ten albums and toured worldwide extensively. Noise Rock
Noise rock (sometimes called noise punk) is a noise music, noise-oriented style of experimental rock that spun off from punk rock in the 1980s. Drawing on movements such as minimal music, minimalism, industrial music, and New York hardcore, artists indulge in extreme levels of distortion through the use of electric guitars and, less frequently, electronic instrumentation, either to provide percussive sounds or to contribute to the overall arrangement. Some groups are tied to song structures, such as Sonic Youth. Although they are not representative of the entire genre, they helped popularize noise rock among alternative rock audiences by incorporating melodies into their droning textures of sound, which set a template that numerous other groups followed. KK Null
, known by his stage name KK Null, is a Japanese experimental multi-instrumentalist active since the early 1980s. He began as a guitarist but learned how to compose, sing, play drums, and create electronic music. He also studied Butoh dance at Min Tanaka's workshop. KK Null joined the noise / progressive rock band YBO2 in 1984, issuing several albums and EPs throughout the remainder of the decade. Later he founded bands, such as Absolut Null Punkt (a.k.a. ANP) and the most well known, a self-described "progressive hardcore trio", Zeni Geva. Cactuses Come In Flocks
''Cactuses Come In Flocks'' is an album by Melt-Banana. It is their second full-length release, although the band refers to it as their "1&½nd album". The album was originally released on cassette by Chocolate Monk and was later re-issued to CD and LP by A-Zap. ''Cactuses Come in Flocks'' contains an early live performance in November 1992 at an improvisation festival at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. None of these songs ever made it to any studio recording although the song "To the Core" has the same lyrics as "Chicken Headed Raccoon Dog" on their debut album ''Speak Squeak Creak''. The other half of the album is a studio session from July 1994 soon after the recording of the first album. These songs were recorded specially for this release. The sound is some of the rawest of Melt-Banana. This recording also marks the debut of Melt-Banana regulars "Ketchup-Mess" (in a much slower version) and "Picnic in Panic" (in a much faster version). Steve Albini
Steve Albini (pronounced ; born July 22, 1962) is an American musician, record producer, audio engineer and music journalist. He was a member of Big Black, Rapeman and Flour, and is a member of Shellac. He is the founder, owner and principal engineer of Electrical Audio, a recording studio complex in Chicago. In 2018, Albini estimated that he had worked on several thousand albums over his career. He has worked with acts such as Nirvana, Pixies, the Breeders, PJ Harvey, and former Led Zeppelin members Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. Albini is also known for his outspoken views on the music industry, having stated repeatedly that it financially exploits artists and homogenizes their sound.
