Speak No Evil (Wayne Shorter Album)
''Speak No Evil'' is the sixth album by Wayne Shorter. It was released in June 1966 by Blue Note Records. The music combines elements of hard bop and modal jazz, and features Shorter on tenor saxophone, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Elvin Jones. The cover photo is of Shorter's first wife, Teruko (Irene) Nakagami, whom he met in 1961. Reception ''Speak No Evil'' was one of several albums Shorter recorded for Blue Note in 1964, his first year as a member of Miles Davis's mid-1960s quintet. The album is generally regarded as one of Shorter's finest, and also a highlight of the Blue Note catalogue. ''The Penguin Guide to Jazz'' selected this album as part of its suggested "Core Collection" calling it "by far Shorter's most satisfying record". Murray Horwitz stated in 2001 that "''Speak No Evil'' is sort of a consolidation of Wayne Shorter's compositional excellence. It's so thorough and consistent and wide-ranging. It's almost ...

Three Wise Monkeys
The three wise monkeys are a Japanese pictorial maxim, embodying the proverbial principle "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil". The three monkeys are * Mizaru, who sees no evil, covering his eyes * Kikazaru, who hears no evil, covering his ears, and * Iwazaru, who speaks no evil, covering his mouth. Lafcadio Hearn refers to them as the three mystic apes. There are various meanings ascribed to the monkeys and the proverb including associations with being of good mind, speech and action. The phrase is often used to refer to those who deal with impropriety by turning a blind eye. Outside Japan the monkeys' names are sometimes given as ''Mizaru'', ''Mikazaru'' and ''Mazaru'', as the last two names were corrupted from the Japanese originals. The monkeys are Japanese macaques, a common species in Japan. Origin The source that popularized this pictorial maxim is a 17th-century carving over a door of the Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō, Japan. The carvings at Tōshō-gū Shri ...

Christopher Loudon of Jazz Times stated that Purim and Moreira "hit a new high with ''Speak No Evil'', arguably their most intriguing outing since their Return to Forever days of the early '70s." Writing for The Washington Post, Mike Joyce acknowledged that Purim is "not in prime form" on the album, but noted that it "has its rew ...
