Spaulding Square, Los Angeles
Spaulding Square is a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. History Spaulding Square is named after California architect Albert Starr Spaulding, who purchased the area and subdivided it in 1914. It a neighborhood of modest homes built between 1916 and 1921. Many of the early residents were actors and technicians from the movie industry. There are approximately 160 homes In the area. There are Colonial-style bungalows, along some Italian, Renaissance, English, Mediterranean, Spanish, Prairie and Craftsman homes. One early resident was Rudolph J. Berquist, a cinematographer known for the silent films Camille and One Night in Rome. He built his home at 1400 N Ogden Drive in 1919. In 1993, Spaulding Square was designated a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) by the city of Los Angeles. ''One Night in Rome'' is a 1924 American silent drama film starring Laurette Taylor. The film was directed by Clarence G. Badger and written by J. Hartley Manners, Ms. Taylor's husband, based upon his play of the same name. Laurette Taylor was a great name of the American theatre, who made only three films in a triumph-studded career, all of them derived from plays by her husband. This was the last of those three films (the previous two had been done by Metro Pictures). Ms. Taylor seems to have enjoyed making ''One Night in Rome'' as she kept a personal print of the movie to always show guests at her home, re-running it over and over again. Hugo Haas
Hugo Haas (19 February 1901 – 1 December 1968) was a Czech film actor, director and writer. He appeared in more than 60 films between 1926 and 1962, as well as directing 20 films between 1933 and 1962. Life and career Haas was born in Brno, Austria-Hungary (now in the Czech Republic), and died in Vienna, Austria from complications of asthma. He and his brother, Pavel Haas, studied voice at the Brno Conservatory under composer Leoš Janáček. Pavel Haas went on to become a noted composer himself before he was killed in Auschwitz in 1944.
