The company's core businesses include distributing food to independent grocers, military commissaries, and corporate-owned retail stores in 44 states, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East. SpartanNash operates 142 corporate-owned retail stores under a number of brands located in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio, many of which were local grocery chains acquired by SpartanNash. No Frills (currently styled ''NOFRILLS'' and formerly styled ''nofrills'') is a Canadian chain of discount supermarkets, owned by Loblaw Companies Limited, a subsidiary of George Weston Limited. There are over 200 franchise stores located in nine Canadian provinces. History The first No Frills store was a converted Loblaws outlet slated for closure. The store opened on July 5, 1978, in East York, Toronto. While it offered a very limited range of goods and basic customer service, the store promoted discount prices. The opening of the prototype outlet coincided with a period of rising inflation rates and consumer complaints regarding the high price of food. Coldwater, Michigan
Coldwater is a city in Branch County, Michigan, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 10,945. It is the county seat of Branch County, located in the center of the southern border of Michigan. The city is surrounded by Coldwater Township, but is administratively autonomous. History American settlers did not move into the area until around 1830, with many arriving from New York and New England. Coldwater was incorporated as a village in 1837, and then incorporated by the legislature as a city in 1861. It was designated in 1842 as the county seat of Branch County. Glen's Markets was an American supermarket chain founded in Gaylord, Michigan in 1951. The chain had over 20 stores throughout northern Michigan at its peak. It was a subsidiary of SpartanNash, who converted most of the chain's locations to its Family Fare banner between 2010 and 2014. History The first Glen's Market was opened in 1951 in Gaylord, Michigan by Glen Catt, in a store originally known as Vincent's. The store was expanded later in the 1950s, just as Glen's became affiliated Spartan Foods (now SpartanNash). Stores in Kalkaska and Grayling opened in 1956 and 1959. Throughout the 1970s, the original three stores were relocated to new buildings, while many more were added throughout northeastern Michigan. Seaway Food Town
Seaway Food Town, Inc. was a company that operated the Food Town chain of supermarkets and The Pharm chain of discount drug stores in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Based in Maumee, Ohio, it was founded in 1948 as a buying and advertising cooperative, incorporated as Seaway Food Town in 1957, and became a publicly traded company in the early 1960s. The company was acquired by Spartan Stores in August 2000. At the time of the merger with Spartan, the company operated 47 Food Town supermarkets and 26 The Pharm deep-discount drugstores. Felpausch
Felpausch was a grocery store chain based in Hastings, Michigan, United States. The first store opened in Hastings in 1933, and the chain operated primarily in the southwestern quadrant of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Its 20 locations were sold to Spartan Stores (now SpartanNash), who largely converted them to Family Fare and D&W Fresh Market. History Felpausch was founded in 1933 in Hastings, Michigan. A store in Albion was built in 1954. By 1962, the chain was also in Eaton Rapids, Marshall, and Mason. In 1971, the Felpausch chain expanded by buying former Harding's Market locations in Delton and Bronson, Michigan. The Bronson store was sold in 1982. Econofoods is a grocery chain located in the US which, at its peak, had stores in Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Iowa, Wyoming, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Econofoods was formerly a brand of SpartanNash, and was listed among its retail banners until November 2021. All Econofoods stores in Michigan and two in Wisconsin were owned and operated by T & C Markets of Brillion, WI, but were subsequently sold to Minnesota-based grocery retailer, Coborn's in 2021, which rebranded the stores as Tadych's Marketplace Foods. Family Fare is an American supermarket chain. A division of SpartanNash, it has operated stores in Michigan since 1966, and also operates in North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. History The first Family Fare store opened in 1966 in Holland, Michigan. It was an existing supermarket which was acquired in 1973 by Don Koop. By the 1990s, the chain was owned by Spartan Stores (now SpartanNash), and had added locations in Byron Center and Lowell. Family Fare expanded into Indiana in the late 1980s with four stores, but closed all four in 1995. D&W Fresh Market is an American supermarket chain owned and operated by SpartanNash. Begun in Grandville, Michigan, the chain consists of ten stores, nine of which are in the southwestern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. History D&W Fresh Market was founded in 1943 by Roy Woodrick and Sid DeVries. The first store was opened in Grandville, Michigan as an IGA retail grocery store. It was one of the first grocery stores in Grand Rapids to sell USDA Choice Beef exclusively. In the early 1960s, DeVries and Woodrick created a new corporate entity for the operation by the name of D&W and designed the company's signature heart logo.
