Count Gustaf Adolf Sparre (1746–1794) was a Swedish art collector. Sparre was born in Gothenburg and travelled widely through Europe, collecting mostly Flemish and Dutch cabinet paintings. His collection of over 100 paintings is unusual because it remained largely intact for over two centuries. He was the wealthy son of the Marshal of the Court and the director of the Swedish East India Company (SOIC), Count Rutger Axel Sparre and Sara Christina Sahlgren (1723–1766). Her uncle Niclas Sahlgren had been a founder of the SOIC. Gustaf Adolf Sparre studied as a teenager at Lund and Uppsala University and spent the years 1768–1771 making a Grand Tour abroad, visiting Britain, the Netherlands, France and Germany. It was during these early travels that he began buying art. Christian Sparre
Christian Sparre (30 July 1859 – 4 November 1940) was a Norwegian Commanding Admiral and Member of Parliament. The mountain of Sparrefjellet at Spitsbergen is named after him. Christian Herman Sparre was born in Høland (now Aurskog-Høland), Akershus, Norway. His father, Ole Jacob Louis Sparre (1831–1889), was a physician and Member of Parliament. Sparre grew up in Rollag in Buskerud and in Strandebarm in Hardanger. He graduated from the Norwegian Naval Academy in 1881. In addition to his maritime education, Sparre was a student at the Norwegian Military Academy in 1884. Christian Sparre had a long and productive career. From 1881, he was a lieutenant in the Royal Norwegian Navy. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1884 and to captain in 1894. From 1898 to 1900, he was chief of the Naval Academy. Gustaf Adolf Vive Sparre af Söfdeborg (4 September 1802 – 26 April 1886) was a Swedish nobleman, civil servant and politician. He was Sweden's Prime Minister for Justice, and later served as Chancellor of the Universities, and Marshal of the Realm, as well as several other offices. Biography Sparre was born in 1802 into the comital ''af Söfdeborg'' branch of the House of Sparre. He enrolled at Uppsala University in 1816 and graduated in 1823, after which he began his career as a jurist. In 1848 Sparre was chosen as Prime Minister for Justice, and had to deal with the Revolutions of 1848 as well as the reactionary response in the subsequent years. He resigned in 1856 and became President of the Svea Court of Appeals instead. Sparre also served as Chancellor of both Universities between 1856 and 1867, and was Marshal of the Realm from 1864 until his death.
