Sparkman, Arkansas
Sparkman is a city in Dallas County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 427 at the 2010 census, down from 586 in 2000. History Sparkman was established between 1911 and 1913 and was named after sawmill owner Lemuel "Pete" Sparkman. In 1915, the ''Sparkman News'' was established, Sparkman's first election was held, and electricity was installed. The first school in Sparkman was a two-story building with an enrollment of 132. H.O. Theatt was the first principal, with Miss Ethel Fite and Miss Ella Adams being the first teachers. A Baptist church was organized in 1914, with Methodist and A.M.E. churches organizing in 1916. Geography Sparkman is located in western Dallas County at (33.917201, -92.848763). Arkansas Highway 128 passes through the center of town as Main Street and leads southeast to Highway 9 at Holly Springs. William Edwin "Bill" Sparkman Jr. (August 12, 1958 – September 12, 2009) was an American schoolteacher and Field Representative for the United States Census Bureau found dead in September 2009 under suspicious circumstances. After more than two months of investigation, police concluded that his death was a suicide, staged by him to look like a homicide, so that his family could collect life insurance. Biographical details Sparkman was raised in Mulberry, Florida, the oldest of three sons of a high school principal and a furniture company executive. Sparkman was an altar boy as a child. In high school, he wrote for the local weekly newspaper, ''The Mulberry Press'', and was the football team manager. An Eagle Scout, he worked for the Boy Scouts of America as an adult, overseeing the programs in Polk and Hillsborough counties. Sparkman High School
Sparkman High School is a public high school in Harvest, Alabama, United States in the Madison County Schools district. The school was named after senator and former vice presidential nominee John Jackson Sparkman. Sparkman is one of the largest high schools in northern Alabama and serves students in grades 10- 12. The school's mascot is a Senator. The school has an enrollment of around 2,400 students. Sparkman High's main rivals are Bob Jones High School and James Clemens High School. In 2006, the Sparkman Ninth Grade School was built next to the high school. Campus Sparkman High was originally located in Toney. The old building is now Sparkman Middle School. Now located on Jeff Road in Harvest, the current high school building was built in 1997.
