Sparkie (satellite)
Sparkie (or 3CS-1) was a satellite, part of the Three Corner Satellite (3CS) project, a three satellite (Sparkie, Ralphie and Petey) student research project. It was designed and built by mostly undergraduate students at the Arizona State University as part of the Air Force Research Laboratory's University Nanosat Program. Sparky was responsible for structure, power and the attitude system in the 3CS project. Satellite carries the name of Arizona State University's mascot, Sparky. Ralphie (satellite)
Ralphie (or 3CS-2) was a satellite, part of the Three Corner Satellite (3CS) project, a three satellite ( Sparkie, Ralphie, Petey) student research project. It was designed and built by mostly undergraduate students at the University of Colorado Boulder as part of the Air Force Research Laboratory's University Nanosat Program. Ralphie was responsible for imaging and End-to-End Data Systems in the 3CS project. The satellite carries the name of CU Boulder's mascot, Ralphie. Ralphie was launched on the first launch of the Delta IV Heavy rocket configuration, along with 3CS-1, "Sparkie", but failed to achieve orbit due to a problem with the rocket during launch. Delta IV Heavy
The Delta IV Heavy (Delta 9250H) is an Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle, expendable heavy-lift launch vehicle, the largest type of the Delta IV family. It is the world's third highest-capacity launch vehicle in operation, behind NASA's Space Launch System and SpaceX's Falcon Heavy and closely followed by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, CASC's Long March 5. Sparky (Arizona State Mascot)
Sparky the Sun Devil is the official mascot of Arizona State University. Originally the ASU athletic teams' mascot was an owl, then became a "Normal" (because ASU was founded as a normal school). It was later changed to a bulldog in an attempt to make the school – Arizona State Teacher's College at the time – appear more in line with Yale and other universities that held a higher level of respect. The '' State Press'', the student newspaper, ran frequent appeals during the fall of 1946, urging the Bulldog to be replaced by the new Sun Devil. On November 8, 1946, the student body voted 819 to 196 to make the change. On November 20, as reported by the ''Arizona Republic'', the student council made it official. University Nanosat Program
The University Nanosat Program is a satellite design and fabrication competition for universities. It is jointly administered by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the Space Development and Test Wing and the AFRL Space Vehicles Directorate's Spacecraft Technology division. Petey (satellite)
Petey (or 3CS-3) was a satellite, part of Three Corner Satellite (3CS) project, a three satellite ( Sparkie, Ralphie and Petey) student research project. It was designed and built by mostly undergraduate students at the New Mexico State University as part of the Air Force Research Laboratory's University Nanosat Program. It was responsible for communication system in 3CS project. Satellite was not completed in time for launch of 3CS on December 21, 2004, and later was donated to the National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. The two other 3CS satellites Sparkie and Ralphie were launched 21 December 2004 on the first launch of Delta IV Heavy. 3 Corner Satellite
Three Corner Satellite (or 3CS, or 3CornerSat) consisted of three student-built microsatellites flying in formation. Primary mission objectives were to demonstrate formation flying, provide stereoscopic imaging of cloud formations, and demonstrate distributed and autonomous operations. A pair of spacecraft, Ralphie and Sparkie, was developed by the University of Colorado at Boulder and Arizona State University as part of the Air Force Research Laboratory's University Nanosat Program. A third satellite, Petey, developed by New Mexico State University was originally also part of the 3CS.
