Spanish General Election, 1923
The 1923 Spanish general election was held on Sundays, 29 April and 13 May 1923, to elect the 20th Cortes Generales#Restoration (1874–1930), Restoration Cortes of the Restoration (Spain), Kingdom of Spain. All 409 seats in the Congress of Deputies were up for election, as well as 180 of 360 seats in the Senate of Spain, Senate. This would be the last election under the turno, ''turno'' system, as the Cortes would be dissolved and the Constitution suspended as a result of a Miguel Primo de Rivera#Establishment of dictatorship, military coup in September 1923 staged by Captain General Miguel Primo de Rivera. Primo de Rivera would establish a Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, dictatorship which would last until 1930. In 1931, the Second Spanish Republic would be proclaimed. The Congress of Deputies ( es, link=no, Congreso de los Diputados, italic=unset) is the lower house of the Cortes Generales, Spain's legislative branch. The Congress meets in the Palacio de las Cortes, Madrid, Palace of the Parliament () in Madrid. It has 350 members elected by constituency, constituencies (matching fifty Provinces of Spain, Spanish provinces and two Autonomous cities of Spain, autonomous cities) by closed list proportional representation using the D'Hondt method. Deputies serve four-year terms. The presiding officer is the President of the Congress of Deputies, who is elected by the members thereof. It is the analogue to a speaker.
