Spain At The 2000 Summer Paralympics
Spain competed at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, Australia. The team included 210 athletes—158 on foot and 52 wheelchairs. Spanish competitors won 106 medals, 38 gold, 30 silver and 38 bronze, to finish 4th in the 2000 Summer Paralympics medal table, medal table. Medal table Cheating scandal Spain's intellectual disability basketball team won the tournament and gold medals, but these medals were soon stripped from the team. Shortly after the Games closed, Carlos Ribagorda, a member of the victorious team and an undercover journalist, revealed to the Spanish business magazine ''Capital'' that ten of the twelve members of the team were "ringers", that is, basketball players who were not disabled recruited to make the team stronger. None of these members underwent tests to verify they were actually disabled, nor would they have qualified had the tests been performed. Spanish Paralympic Committee
Spanish Paralympic Committee ( es, Comité Paralímpico Español, CPE) is a Spanish non-profit sport organisation founded in 1995, that oversees five national disability sport federations. The organisation has a Secretary General and a President. Since 2005, they have been supported by Plan ADO. In 2000, the CPE was involved in a cheating scandal at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. History The CPE was created in 1995 in response to the success of Spanish competitors at the 1992 Summer Paralympics. ONCE, Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles (ONCE) assisted in setting up the CPE. In 1998, the Spanish government changed the laws, which impacted the status of the CPE to recognise it as equal to that of the Spanish Olympic Committee.
