Space Ritual
''The Space Ritual Alive in Liverpool and London'' (commonly known as ''Space Ritual'') is a 1973 live double album recorded in 1972 by UK rock band Hawkwind. It is their fourth album, reached #9 in the UK album charts and briefly dented the ''Billboard Top 200'', peaking at #179. Background The album was recorded during the tour to promote their ''Doremi Fasol Latido'' album, which comprises the bulk of this set. In addition there are new tracks ("Born To Go", "Upside Down" and "Orgone Accumulator") and the songs are interspersed by electronic and spoken pieces, making this one continuous performance. Their recent hit single "Silver Machine" was excluded from the set, and only "Master of the Universe" remains from their first two albums. Hawkwind
Hawkwind are an English rock band known as one of the earliest space rock groups. Since their formation in November 1969, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and have incorporated many different styles into their music, including hard rock, progressive rock and psychedelic rock. They are also regarded as an influential proto-punk band. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. Many musicians, dancers and writers have worked with the band since their inception. Notable musicians who have performed in Hawkwind include Lemmy, Ginger Baker, Robert Calvert, Nik Turner and Huw Lloyd-Langton. However, the band are most closely associated with their founder, singer, songwriter and guitarist Dave Brock, who is the only remaining original member. Julian David Cope (born 21 October 1957) is an English musician and author. He was the singer and songwriter in Liverpool post-punk band the Teardrop Explodes and has followed a solo career since 1983 in addition to working on musical side projects such as Queen Elizabeth, Brain Donor and Black Sheep. Cope is also an author on Neolithic culture, publishing ''The Modern Antiquarian'' in 1998, and a political and cultural activist with a public interest in occultism and paganism. He has written two volumes of autobiography, ''Head-On'' (1994) and ''Repossessed'' (1999); two volumes of archaeology, ''The Modern Antiquarian'' (1998) and ''The Megalithic European'' (2004); and three volumes of musicology, ''Krautrocksampler'' (1995), ''Japrocksampler'' (2007); and ''Copendium: A Guide to the Musical Underground'' (2012). Hawkwind Anthology
The ''Hawkwind Anthology'' series of records were originally issued mid-1980s containing live and outtake material from Hawkwind's career to that date. Dave Brock compiled the package, essentially a best of '' The Weird Tapes'', for release on the Samurai imprint. It was released as three separate discs and also as a picture disc box set including an interview disc. It was subsequently licensed to receiver records and eventually sold to Castle Communications who have released as an extended set. "Because there was so much compilation and re-released material about, Jim White thought it would be a good idea to bring together a catalogue of all our own stuff that we liked, in the hope of stopping all that. But we never got any royalties out of the Anthology sets we did with them, and as far as we know they've sold around 66,000 of that triple set. Roadhawks
''Roadhawks'' is a 1976 compilation album by Hawkwind covering the years 1970-1975, and it peaked at #45 on the UK album charts. It is the first compilation release from the group, marking the end of the group's tenure with United Artists Records. The music was compiled and mixed by the group's Dave Brock.Liner notes for the album The tracks are mostly presented in chronological order. The singles "Silver Machine" and "Urban Guerrilla" were included on an album for the first time, "Urban Guerilla" having been scarcely available due to its withdrawal after three weeks of release. A previously unreleased live version of "You Shouldn't Do That" segued with an unlisted "Seeing It As You Really Are" is included, recorded from the same live shows where ''Space Ritual'' was derived, and is now included as a bonus track on CD re-issues of the ''Space Ritual'' album. Let It Rock (magazine)
''Let It Rock'' was a monthly British music magazine, which featured lengthy critical articles, record reviews, and feature articles covering a wide spectrum of popular music, including soul, reggae, and blues. Between October 1972 and December 1975, 35 issues of the magazine were published in London, by Hanover Books, sometime in Berners Street W1. The publisher was Peter Shepherd, who also published other music publications including ''Folk Review'' and ''Country Music''. Dave Laing was the founding editor; John Pidgeon took over as editor in October 1973. The reviews editor was Simon Frith, and Charlie Gillett was consultant editor. Other contributors included John Peel, Lester Bangs, Michael Gray, Mick Gold, Mick Houghton, David Downing, Gary Herman, Idris Walters, Karl Dallas , Ian Hoare and Phil Hardy, and the soul music column was written by Pete Wingfield. Liquid Len
Jonathan Smeeton is a British lighting and production designer who was active in the UK from the late 1960s, and then in the US from late 1970s up to his retirement in 2018. Smeeton started out in the UK underground scene in the late 1960s. By 1971, he had become involved with Hawkwind, using the alias Liquid Len and the Lensmen (a reference to the ''Lensman'' space opera books), and remained with them for seven years developing his craft. He was name-checked in the Genesis song " The Battle of Epping Forest" from ''Selling England by the Pound'' (1973), later going on to work for the band's singer Peter Gabriel: He retired from the business in April 2018, his last official show being for Diana Ross and the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl in June 2018. Suspended animation is the temporary (short- or long-term) slowing or stopping of biological function so that physiological capabilities are preserved. It may be either hypometabolic or ametabolic in nature. It may be induced by either endogenous, natural or artificial biological, chemical or physical means. Robert Calvert
Robert Newton Calvert (9 March 1945 – 14 August 1988) was a South African-British writer, poet, and musician. He is principally known for his role as lyricist, performance poet and lead vocalist of the space rock band Hawkwind. Early life Calvert was born in Pretoria, South Africa, and moved with his parents to England when he was two. He attended school in London and Margate, living in a flat in Arlington House. Having finished school he joined the Air Training Corps, in which he became a corporal and played trumpet for the 438 Squadron band. He then went on to college in Canterbury. After leaving college, and having been denied his childhood dream of becoming a fighter pilot, he slowly acquainted himself with the UK's bohemian scene. Barney Bubbles
Barney Bubbles (born Colin Fulcher; 30 July 1942 – 14 November 1983) was an English graphic artist whose work encompassed graphic design and music video direction. Bubbles, who also sketched and painted privately, is best known for his distinctive contribution to the design practices associated with the British rock music, British independent music scene of the 1970s and 1980s. His record sleeves, laden with symbols and riddles, were his most recognisable output. Early life Fulcher was born in Tranmere Road, Whitton, London, Whitton, Middlesex (now Greater London), in July 1942. He attended Isleworth and Syon School, Isleworth Grammar School. Silver Machine
"Silver Machine" is a 1972 song by the UK rock group Hawkwind. It was originally released as a single on 9 June 1972, reaching number three on the UK singles chart. The single was re-issued in 1976, again in 1978 reaching number 34 on the UK singles charts, and once again in 1983 reaching number 67 on the UK singles charts. The original mix has been re-released on the remasters version of ''In Search of Space''. The single "Silver Machine" was recorded live at a Greasy Truckers benefit gig at The Roundhouse, London on 13 February 1972 and this version was released on the various artists compilation album '' Glastonbury Fayre'' and the 2007 box set of ''Greasy Truckers Party''. Overdubs were applied and mixing took place at Morgan Studios with Douglas Smith and Dave Robinson overseeing the process. Dave Brock took production credits using an alias of Dr Technical.
